THE LATE CAPTAIN WESTENRA.
Another of our early Canterbury colonists bas departed from us at a good old age. Captain Richard Westenra, of he*- Majesty’s 7th Regiment of Fusiliers, and grandson of a former Lord Rossmore, although not a Canterbury Pilgrim in the strictest sense, not a passenger that is to say by one of the first four ships, was a very early settler, having arrived at Lyttelton with his family in October, 1851. He took up his abode at once on his section in Hereford street, and his house, a very superior one for those days, was for a long time a landmark in Christchurch. Though always leading a quiet and peaceable life, and not mixing himself up with the turmoil of politics. Captain Westenra faithfully discharged the duties of a citizen and colonist. He was for some years one of the members for Christchurch in the Provincial Cou cil, and for a considerable period filled the ofi.ee of Chairman of Committees. As a J.P. also he often took his seat on the Bench. Of late years he has lived a very retired life at his station at Camla. Captain Westenra was a soldier and gentleman of the old school, and was always looked up to as a man of unimpeachable integrity, and beloved for his kindliness of heart. Thrcughout his long life we should imagine that he rarely, if ever, made an enemy.
