MAOill. The Union Company's steamer Maori, Captain Berniche, arrived from her usual trip round the Middle Island on Sunday eight. L«ft Dunedia at 7 p.m. January 19lh, steamel down to Port Chalmers and coaled, leaving there i.tl2pm.; next day a hard S.W. tralo was encountered with heavy sea: reached Bluff at 2 a.m. January ' Ist, and left at 9.3 J a m.. arriving at Preservation Inlet at 2 a.m. January 2iud, a strong N.W. gale blowing and continuing all day; left at 9 a.m J nuary 23rd. and made Faning Cove, 1 usky Sound, at 2.15 p m. 2*rd; l6ft at 3 p.t*. and reached Martia's Bay at 4.45 a.m. January 24th ; a* 7 a.m. lowered the boat and pulled in to the entrance to the river, but found the bar impossibly the surf bre king right across it. The steamer th-n went across to the south ride of the Bay and succeeded in effecting a -andiug on the beach ; pushed -on then to Big Bay and communicated with the Bettlers there, and thence into Jackson's fiay, ■which was reached at 5 u m January 24th ; left there at aidnight. and arrived off Hokitika bar at 4 30 p.m ; crossed lhe bar and made fast to th"» wharf at 9 p m.; next day a heavy galeof ■wind was blowing accompanied by heavy rain. Discharged cargo on January 27th, and left Hokitika at 9.30 a.m. January 28th for Greyznouth, arriving -it 11 am. Landed ca*go and filled up with coal, leaving the Grey at noon January 29th; called in at Westport same day. and lett at noon Jannary s:oth; arrived off Nel-on at 5 a.m. January 3;st, got alongside the wharf at 7 a.m.; left again at 10 a.m , and exoerienced a st'ong S. r=j. brefze to French Pass, increasing then to a gale to passing Cipe Campbell, when it moderated and eLifted to the eastward, the steamer arriving in harbor on Sunday night.
