REVIEW COMMITTEE.
A. meeting of the review committee was held at the Commercial Hotel last evening. Present—Captain Hawkes (in the chair), Captain Craig, Captain Warner, Captain Slater, Lieut Strange, Lieut. Wolfe, Lieut. Appleby, Quarter master Sergt. Fox, Sergt. Parker," Quarter-master Sergt. McGuinness. The chairman reported that he had visited the Addington barracks, where one thousand men could be comfortably billetted. The barrack master stated that though he could not undertake to cater for the men, there was a baker close by who would take this work in band. As to the catering there oould be no difficulty. Mr Bligh, of Bligh's restaurant, had offered to provide bedding and meals for 100 men at Is per bed, and meals for 300 men at Is. The chairman also read an offer from Mr Freeman, of the Southern Hotel, to billet and cater for fifty men during the review for 15* per head, including the whole time ; Mr G-eenwood, secretary of the Licensed Victuallers'Association, attended, and handed in a lint of publicans willing to billet a number of men up to 284, at la per meal and Is per bed. Captain Hawkes said that aot being able to find accommodation in the city they would bave to take the barracks, and get leave from the Licensing Bench for some publican to extend his license there and open a canteen. Captain Hawkes pointed out that in Dunedin the course adopted was to allocate hotel accommodation as the answers came in, and he theught this should he done here. Lieutenant Wolfe said he would like to m >ve —"That a committee be appointed to request the Government to lend the Immigration Barracks for the occasion of the Volunteer Review." Captain Hawkes Tead an estimate, prepared by himself, comparatively as to the barracks and as to billetting the men in the city. The first one showed that charging the men 10a for their catering and billetting in the city the cost would be £470. The second, based on the getting the barracks at Addington, and charging the mnn only 5s for their catering during the review, the cost amounted to £451, showing a saving of £2O, and only charging visitors 5 s instead of 10s. After some discussion, Lieut. Wolfe moved, "That immediate application be made to the Government for the use of the Immigration Barracks for the Volunteers attending the review ; that application be made to the Licensing Bench for permission to the Buocessful tenderer for the catering for the men to exter d his license to the barracks."
Quarter-master Sergt. Fox seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Captain Craig moved—" That the tenders of Messrs Bligh and Freeman be accepted, subject to the review arrangements being perfected, ><nd that the tenders handed in by Mr Greenwood be accepted for billetting the balance of men remaining over what can be billetted in the barracks at Addington." Quar er mauter Sergt. McGuinneßS seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The following is the list of accepted names : -Messrs Bligh, Freeman, Barrett, Deal, Allen. Hill, Klingenst.ien, Morling, Sivago, Walluce, Fuchs, Mumford, and Stenning. Lieut. Strange moved—" That tenders for further accommodation in town be invited. Tend-rs to be sent in on before February 10rh."
The resolution having bean seconded and carried, The meeting then adjourned after some further routine bnwpss.
