THE OPERA.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sib, —Your issue of this evening mentions the merits and demerits of the opera the "Bohemian Girl" performed on Saturday. I think the compiler of that notice is wrong in bis conclusions as to the destination of the bouquet, and that the statement as it stands mnst be hurtful to two persons—the donor and recipient. I think there were few exceptions to the opinion that the solo was a real pleasure to listen to, and that at the time the flowers W 're s;nt the stage was quite unoccupied by any of the vocal artistes, and it would be very bad taste to infer the donor intended it as a compliment to empty space. I have no doubt many deemed it an unusual compliment because unaccustomed to witness it. Yet I da not believe anyone thought propriety was outraged. if the floral tribute came from a lady the value was increased by so much, and it seems to me that an expression of appreciation from such a source would be as sweet to a clarionet as to a Formes or Santley. Your remark may tend to discourage ladies from performing those acts of grace which in all ages has been their recognised task, namely, to bestow marks of appreciation upon merit. If that rule were more popularly recognised, their approbation or displeasure would refine a great many popular pleasures. I am totally unacquainted with either donor or recipient in this case ; but it struck me as leaning to unfairness, and I thought possibly the vinegar might be extracted if there was no intention to be acid. I am, &c, Oid Fogey. [ February 2nd, 1880.
