NEWS OF THE DAY.
Pabtob Ohiniqttt. —This gentleman will leotu-e at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next, commencing each evening at 7.30. The admission will be by ticket, price Is. Mission Sbbviob. —Pastor Chiniqny will preach at the Baptist Ohurch, Madras street, at 11 a.m. to-morrow, and there will be a special service at the Oddfellows’ Hall at 3 p.m. The collection will be ia aid of the mission. Resident Magistrate’s Court. The only business done to-day was the doing of three men, one for assault, and two for street fighting. Thbatbb Royal—Monday Evening The entertainment at the Theatre on Monday next in aid of the Irish Distress Fund promises to be a brilliant success. By arrangement with Prefessor Hughes, Mr Lyeter’s Opera Company have kindly consented to appear in the “ Lily of Killamey” and the second act of “Lucia.” The following Friendly Societies have promised their support:—The Manchester Unity and the Independent Orders of Oddfellows, the Ancient Order of Druids, the Hibernian Catholic Society, the Ancient Order of Foresters, and the Protestant Friendly Alliance. A late train to Lyttelton has been procured by arrangement with the department.
Aebival or Pastob Chiniqut. —This gentleman arrived in port by the a.s Hawea this morning, and was met by a large number of people, including several ministers and members of the Orange Q-rand Lodge. When the steamer reached the wharf an address was presented by the Rev W. H. Horner, to which Mr Ohiniquy replied acknowledging the address and the feelings therein expressed. An address was then read by the Grand Master of the Orange JLodge, Bro E. Bevell. Pastor Ohiniquy thanked the Orangemen for the expression of kindly feeling towards him. A number of the reverend gentlemen present and members of the Orange Grand Lodge and others were then presented to Pastor Ohiniquy. The whole of the proceedings were extremely quietly conducted. Ponca Changes. —lt is understood that Mr Inspector Hickson will shortly be removed from the Christchurch station to take charge of the force at Clyde. Adeift. —lt has been reported to the police that a boat bottom upwards floated ashore at New Brighton yesterday, about four miles from the New Brighton Hotel. It had no seats or gear, and nothing to indicate where it came from. New Zealand Rifle Association.— Those members of the association who intend taking part in the forthcoming meeting, at Nelson, are reminded that the entries for the matches close on February 14th, and unless made at that date will be charged for at doable rates.
Lectvbe. —The Rev. J. Berry delivered a lecture last evening in the Wesleyan Sabbath School-room, Durham street, when there wag a very good attendance. The subject of the lecture was “ A Trip to England,” and the rev. gentleman succeeded in interesting his audience by the recital of what he had seen during his recent visit to the home country. Picnic. —The employes of Messrs Lightband, Allan, and 00., to the number of fully 409, held their annual picnic yesterday. The parly mustered early, and were conveyed to Sumner. Ample provision had been made in the commissariat department, which was done full justice to. The Railway Band was in attendance, and their music added in no little degree to the enjoyment of the day’s pleasure. Sports of various kinds were improvised on the beach, and some of the younger members of the parly indulged in dancing, Every one entered fully into the affair, and throughout it was a complete success. A start was made about dusk, and the large party arrived home safely after spending a most enjoyable day. Ibish Distebss Fund. —The committee at its meeting yesterday resolved to send home by cable a sum of not less than £SOO as a first instalment of the fund being raised for the relief of sufferers by the famine in Ireland.
Harmonic Society. —The next practice of the Chris-church Harmonic Society will be held at St John’s s -toolroom on Tuesday evening'. The work at present in hand, and which will be given at the next concert, is Smart’s c intata of “The Bride of Dnnkerrow.” The music is said to be somswhat difficult, but of a very taking character. Harbor Board —A meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board will be held on Monday. Eiple Match. — A match is abont to be got up between tbe non-commissioned officers of the Artil ery and the commissioned officers of the Headquarters companies. lie Artillerymen should not have much difficulty in winning the match. Temperance Hotel Company. The annus] general meeting will be held on Monday, th« 9th February, at the old Temperance Hall, Gloucester street, at 4 p m.
Ladies’ Coffee Room.’— Attention is directed to an advertisement respecting the opening of coffee rooms in connection with the Tonng Women’s Christian Association. The now ro >ms in Cathedral square will be open on Monday next. Kaiapoi Wesleyan Chuech —It is intended that tho collections on Sunday shall bo devoted to tbe distress in Ireland. Kaiapoi Tonic Sol Pa Class — lt is intended to resume this dais in the Wesleyan school. Mr T. A. Weston is the teacher. Special Offbetoht. —A special offertory in aid of the Irish famine relief fund will be taken at St. John’s Church to-morrow, at both morning at,d evening services.
