Impoet2D Stock. The bay Norfolk trotting ponoy Prince Charming was landed yesterday from the Botomuhana in first class condition. This poney, it will be remembered, had to be transhipped from the Euterpe on arrival fiom England, as it was not accompanied by a veterinary surgeon’s certificate, and was taken by the Kotomahane to Melbourne where the necessary document was procured. P-ince Charming, imported by the old settler, Mr Drmpier Orossley, is a remarkably handsome dark bay with black points, standing twelve hands one inch. Ho is by Perfection' out of Oinde-alla, and is bred by A. Scott, of Bctherfield Park, Hants. Perfection was sold to the Cob Stud Company for 400 guineas, and took the first prize at Islington for three years running. Cinderella ie also a prizetaker, having been awarded first prize at the Eoyal Agricultural Show at Suffolk. We must congratulate the importer on the arrival of this valuable poney, after its six months at sea. We have no doubt it will prove a great addition to the sires of this province. Journalistic.— Mr J. M. Perrier, the "Intelligent Vagrant,” a journalist wellknown throughout New Zealand, and who as lecturer .£« the Diorama of Now Zealand so much entertained the Ohustohurch public, is now engaged on the “ Sydney Daily Telegraph,” on opposition paper to the “ Morning Herald.” His arfehs on the “ Night Side of Sydney ” have been creating a great sensation in th.at city? J’h.e new p.aper has be come very popular.

Councillor Ayers yesterday, aftr about a couple of hours’ canvassing at thfsale-yards, succeeded in obtaining £25 in osh and the promise of two tons potatoes fowrds tho fund now being raised for the reliofbf tho distress in Ireland. Bathing n the Ueathcote. —Complaints have been nado to the police of persons bathing duing the day in the Heathcote river, near Vilson’s bridge, and steps will be taken to privent this. The names of several boy offendfs have already been taken note of by the poire. Educatdn Returns. —The return for the last quarte: of 1879 for tho Education District of North Canterbury gives the following figures : —lota! number of schools, 120; total teachers, male 171, female 187 ; sewing mistresses 13 ; children on roll at beginning of quarter 14,009 ; at end of quarter 15,230, namely 7C72 males and 7258 females.; strict average atendance 11,065, working average 11,381. The letiids. Tho usual fortnightly meeting o’ the Oak of Sydenham was held at their Lod;e room, St. Saviour’s schoolroom, last eveniig. An official visit was paid by the officers of the Pioneer Lodge. Three members were initiated. Several propositions were brought forward for next meeting. The Jqeicui.tubal Delegates.— Messrs Grant tnd Foster, the delegates of the Lincolnshire farmers, yesterday, in company with Mr J. T. Ford, visited several places of public iatereat. They first inspected the Addington Saleyards, and subsequently visited the Land Office, and evinced an interest in the examination of the maps there. They afterwards made the tour of Mr Garforth’s farm at Sprejdon, aud visited tho Cashmere ■Estate. Angiebs’ Licenses. —One hundred and thirty-five anglers’ licenses have been taken out for the present year up to date. The Mendelssohn Scholarship. —At the Royal Academy of Music,: London, the Mendelssohn scholarship was gained for the first time by a woman —a Miss Maude White, who is now at work upon an opera which is described as “ magnificently dramatic.” Her libretto is taken from Lamartine’s “Jocelyn,” and the young composer’s ardent hope is, that when her darling work is produced, she •may be allowed to guide the orchestra to tho full interpretation of her meaning by conducting it in person. AbeestS. —The police received information ■yesterday from Mastcrton that Frederick Sandberg had been arrested there on a oharg e of larceny at Christchurch. A man named ■ John Kelly was also arrested in that town, on a warrant issued by the Kaiapo: bench in an .affiliation case. Bailway Band Concert. —The following is the programme of the concert to be given by the Railway Brass Band m Cathedral square this evening :—Quick march, “ Old England’s mine for ever,” E. Newton ; Bolero, “ Juanita,” E. Newton, introducing the celebrated song by the Hon, Mrs Norton; valse, “Souvenir,” Emile Waldtenfel; grand march, “ Simplitte.” P. Boiaaon ; lancers, “The Premier,” R. Smith; scbottischo, “ Myra,” R. Smith ; polka, “ Pretty blue eyes,” R. Smith; galop, “Festival,” C. Coote, jun.; national anthem. Kerb Art Union,—Those who have tickets for disposal in connection with the Kerr Art Union are requested to send iu their returns at once in order to facilitate the drawing. Cricket Fixtures. —The Sydenham Youths will play against tho Avonville on Saturday on the Press ground. Sabbath School Institute. The inaugural meet ug of the Canterbury Sabbath School Teachers’ Association will take place in the Oddfellows’ Hall this evening. The chair will be taken by Mr C. B. Taylor, president of •the institute. Addresses will be delivered by •the Revs. W. J. Habens, H. C. M. Watson, and Mr A. Richards. The addresses will be Interspersed with anthems, hymns, &c. Mr Se irell will preside at the harmonium, and Mr Corrick will conduct.
