CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
A meeting c£ the Board of Governors was held at 3 p.m. yesterday. Present—Mr W. Montgomery (chairman). Dr. Coward, Rev. C. Fraser, Messrs J. N. Tosswill, W. Reeves, J. D. Buys, B. W. Fereday, J. V. ColbornoYeel, H. B. Webb, and F. de c. Malet.
The Chairman said that the balance-sheet for the year was on the table. It had not been audited, owing to the absence of Mr Oiiivier, the auditor, on the auditing of the Road Board accounts. No doubt, however, the accounts were absolutely correct, and only wanted tho signature of tho auditor. Tho estimates for the College expenditure for the year were also laid ou the table, and would be considered at that meeting. As members might desire to ask questions, he would suggest that the Board go into committee to consider the estimates and the report of the College committee. On tho motion "f Mr Tosswill, seconded by Mr Malet, tho Board went into committee. Oa reporting progress, the committee reported that the reports of the College committee, the agricultural school committee, Girls’ High School estimates, College estimates, estimates of the school of technical science, Ac., had been adopted, and that the jurisprudence lecture vote had been struck out, and the sum of £IOO added to the vote for College Library. Mr Malet moved—“ That, in deciding to discontinue for the present the lectures on jurisprudence, the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College desire to place on record their appreciation of tho able manner in which Dr. Foster has discharged tho duties of lecturer.”
Mr Fereday seconded the motion, which was carried.
The report of the College committee, as follows, was adopted : January 15th. IFBO. 1. The committee recommends the Board to adopt the proposed time table for I£3o. 2. The committee the Board to adopt the recommendation of thi Professorial Council respecting College Begnlation No. VII.. viz. :
English.—First Examination —Origin, history and structure of tho English language, | prose composition and a general knowledge of the special period and f special' boobs prescribed by the University for the B.A. examination of the year. Second Examination.—Origin, history and structure of the English language, prose con position and a full knowledge of the special period and special books prescribed by tho University for the B.A. examination of the year. General History and Political Economy.— First Examination —Outline of tho period of history prescribed by the University for the B.A. examination of the year, and the main features of the period of English History which forms tho subject of the Pass Lectures for the year. Second Examination.—Detailed knowledge of Political Economy and of the period of history prescribed by the University for the B.A. examination of the year, and a knowledge of the main features of the period of English History which forms tho subject of the Pasr Lectures for the year. Natural Science, First Examination.—Tho portion included in the course of lectures delivered to tho junior class in any one branch. Second Examination. —One branch as defined in tho calendar. 3, The committee reports to the Board that having considered Mr J. von Tunzelmann’s letter on behalf of the lecturers of Canterbury College, it cannot recommend ary alteration's n the present arrangement.
