CORRESPONDENCE.

THE IRISH BELIEF FUND. To the hditor of the Globe.

Sie, —I understand that a meeting was held last Friday, January 23rd, by a few would-be helpers to the above distress. Strange to say some of those so prominent at this meeting require more or less help themselves to keep the wolf from the door. I have also heard a proposition was brought forward to obtain from the farmers contributions of grain, and to solicit the New Zealand Shipping Company to furnish a ship freight free to carry the said contribution of grain. Why, Mr Editor, is it that such relief should always be asked for Ireland, when neither England or Scotland have ever solicited any such relief, although distress has often been greater amongst the people of these two nations ? Now, sir, as to affording real honest relief to the poor sufferers, I am not an opponent to tho cause, and am willing to give my humble mite to a properlyorganised committee, and I should advise those in power in this city to solicit the assistance of a few gentlemen, and at the same time monied men, to get subscriptions for this noble cause, and not men with a little gift of the gab but without either tho will or moans to assist.

Yours, &0., A HIGHLANDER.

[Our correspondent’s ideas appear somewhat mixed. If, however, he doubts the necessity of the Relief Fund, we fear ho is much mistaken.—Kd. Globe ]
