In addressing a political meeting at Birmingham Mr Bright said that tho greatest boon that could bo granted to tho Irish peasantry would be a modifica* tlon of the land laws, enabling the more easy acquirement and the more secure holding of lands. The export of corn has largely decreased. The expediency of the importation of American grain is being discussed. LONDON, January 26. The Afghan Question. 1 With reference to the speech of the First Lord of the Admiralty, at Sutton last week, it now transpires that it is proposed that tho British troops in Afghanistan shall retire from Cahul to Jellalahad, and tho appointment of a British Envoy at Cabul will probably be waived. Tho public belief in tbe rumor recently circulated that a frontier province would be formed between the Khybor and tho Kurrum Passes is strengthened now that the above facts have transpired.
