UNITED CANTERBURY v. MIDLAND. The return match between these two clubs was commenced on Saturday last. The respective teams on the present occasion aro more evenly matched than in the first contest, but wo still think the old club will prove too much for its younger opponent. The United aro not so strong while the Midland are stronger on the present occasion. Ollivier won the toss, and went in with Stevens, but the partnership did not prove of long duration, as a Yorker from Fuller caused Ollivier’s retirement One for 14. Ashby did not stay long, being bowled by Beard for a modest 4. Stevens was soon afterwards well caught by Watson, which made tho Midland partisans cheerful, three good wickets being now down for 33. Cotton and Secretan, however, changed (he aspect of affairs, and it was not until 69 appeared on the board that the latter wa? bowled. Two outs for a 4 eaeh and a 3 were his chief contributions. Reeves did not seem at homo at first, but after a time gained confidence and played a good innings. Ho, however, lost the assistance of his partner, who tried to hit one from Turner with a cross bat. Cotterillmado his 27 in good style, some of hia hits being clean, and wore worth more than were obtained. Reeves and Sheath increased the score to 104, when tho latter was bowled by Fuller for 12, which includes a grand leg hit for 4. It was worth more, but long log had been placed very deep in anticipation. Wilson assisted Reeves in bringing the score to 126, when the latter was unluckily bowled off his pad, after making 32 by good cricket. Hia total was made up by a 6—fine hit to leg—two 4’s, two 3’s, four 2’s, &c. Longdon was bowled by Fuller for 7, and Wilson was soon afterwards caught at mid-on for a patient 8. Frith hit all round at a straight one from Fuller and the innings closed for 140—rather a small score, but which ought to have been still smaller had the fielding been good. The Midland were not long in sending Alpo and Watson to the wickets ; the former, however, gave a chance to shortstop and J. Fowler joined Watson. The latter played in good form, but the former was not at all in his usual play and during his innings had three lucky ones in the slips. Between these two the score gradually increased until 48 appeared, when Watson hit under one from Frith, and was easily taken by Reeves at mid-on. Maodonnell gave a chance to Frith at short-slip, and Turner returned one to the bowler. Four wickets were now down for 60, and soon afterwards time was called, tho score being 65. J. Fowler being not out for 22. The scoring in this innings was rather erratic. 5 byes being put down whereas only one was given. The scorers should put down all runs to the batsmen unless called otherwise by the umpires. We cannot compliment the caretaker upon the wiokeb, nor do we think the ground reflects any credit upon him for the way in which it has been kept during the season, and the constant inquiry has been what does he do during the day, certainly not look after the ground. We trust this may bo improved before another season comes. The match will be resumed on Saturday next. The following is the score : UNITED CANTERBURY CLUB. Ist Innings. A. M. Olllvisr, b Fuller 7 E.
