DISTRESS IN IRELAND.

Collections were made yesterday in the Catholic Church, Barbadoes street, for the above object. At early mass posters were placed conspicuously outside the church, also along the cement fence with the words—- “ Ireland ! Remember, to-day ! Distress in Ireland ! ” in large letters, which, judging from the proceeds of the day, must have been widely read. Tho Rev. Father Ginaty alluded to the claims of Ireland and the poverty existing there at present at all the servicer. There must have been over £2oo' received yesterday at the gate of the church. This amount will be augmented during the week. Tho boys and girls attending tho Catholic parish schools have petitioned Rev. Father Ginaty to place the coat of their prizes won at the Christmas examination, and which wore about to be distributed, to the credit of tho distress fund as their contribution, and the Sunday school children have followed this example. After eleven o’clock mass a fairly attended meeting was held in the boys’ schoolroom. Rav. Father Ginaty, who called tho meeting, explained what he knew concerning the movements in the city for collecting subscriptions. He had attended one at the City Council Chambers, and he would he pleased to hear any practical suggestions from those now present, so that ha might lay them before the municipal committee, to which he belonged. The meeting expressed their thorough confidence in Father Ginaty, and were prepared to assist him in carrying out tho wishes of the committee. The money collected by Father Ginaty is to be handed to the Mayor to be forwarded by him with the other amounts collected in the city.
