HARVESTER CONTEST AT ASHBURTON.
Ihe Aphburtou Agricultural and Pastoral Association have decided to hold their annual trial of reapers and binders on W<dnesday, the 28th instant, in Mr Hay T. Smith's paddecks, near Saunders Bros.' mill, Ashburton. The association have decided to have only three judges, who were elected by ballot at a meeting of the Association, but an engineer is associated with them to give an expert's opinion respecting the maohinery, and this difficult task has been undertaken by Mr E. G. Wright, who was elected by a large majority. The association have also resolved to make the trial a complete one, by having the machines worked in crops cf various weight, eaoh competitor being compelled to cut an acre of light, an acre of medium, and an acre of heavy crop. The stubble left is not to exceed six inches in length, and the judges are to be instructed to take into consideration strength, simplicity, lightness of draught, quality of work done, and shortness of cut. Seven machines are expected to compete, and a very large attendance is anticipated, the string binders being an object of gwat curiosity to all farmers in the county.
