A man was drowned in attempting to reach a boat off Some’s Bay this morniug. A man on the Kina fell overboard yesterday and was rescued by Captain McGregor. Mining NewsThe crushing in the Alburniamine is show ing up well. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 13. An old Native named Tamahere Tawhata was found dead in a paddock. It is supposed he was killed by a kick from a horse. WELLINGTON, January 13. Resignation of Sub-lieutenant Leary, Sub-Lieutenant Leary, of the Wellington Naval Brigade has resigned, in accordance with the finding of the Court of Inquiry, held to investigate the charge made against his conduct. Commission on Native Affairs. It is understood that the Boyal C- mmission on Native affairs will consist of Sir Francis Dillon Bell, Sir W. Fox. and Mr Tawhaio. WELLINGTON, January 13.

AUCKLAND, January 11, England Direct by SteamA mail steamer correspondent writes strongly in favor of direct communication between New Zealand and England, giving the complaint by passengers of the discomfort experienced. He says the Kent fak s fifty New Zealand passengers, and the Norfolk and Orient took larger numbers. The Peninsula and Oriental is the only lino taking through freight, and they demand anything they please. Captain Ashby says ho could have booked two or three hundred passengers for New Zealand by direct steamer who do not like sailing ships. DUNEDIN, January 13, Educational. The attendance at the Otago schools for the quarter ending December was 16,679 at the beginning, and 17,784 at the end of the quarter. The average attendance was 7732 boys and 6905 girls, which is an increase of 1236 on the previous quarter, and the highest ever attained in Otago. No new schools were opened during the quarter. The number of teaches employed by the Board was 209 males and 145 females, besides 15 teachers of sewing. Fatal Accident. 0. Bode, hairdresser and tobacconist, was drowned in the harbor yesteiday by the upsetting of a dingy. Too LateAriel’s nomination for the Cap, received yesterday, was too late. Racing. Jellott’s horses, Richmond and Bos worth, engaged in the Dunedin Cup, are expected to leave Melbourne for the Bluff about the end of the month. OAMARU, January 12. The Harvest. Harvesting prospects are splendid. Harvesting will commence in about a fortnight. The Pedestrian ManiaYoung Gleeson, the pedestrian, walked 60 miles in 11 hours 50 minutes. The Sparrow Nuisance. Sparrows have commenced their depredations amongst some crops in the district. In one instance it was deemed advisable to cut a crop of oats green, to save it from being entirely destroyed. Sudden DeathMatthew Anderson, aged about 50, dropped dead in his garden at Herbert last evening. He had been [suffering from heart disease. He is a man of property, but ha* no relation* here.

Rogers’ F.iugh-a-Ballagh and John Gibson’s Maori Boy, the distance being three-quarters of a mile. The race was won by the former by two lengths. Oats ExtraordinaryIn more than one field of oats this year the stalk is between six and seven feet long, with a correspondingly large head. Harvesting of oats will be general in another week.
