[reuter’s telegrams.] LONDON, January 9. Lord Derby and Protection-
Earl Derby, speaking at Huddersfield to-day, referred to tbo agitations in favor of protection as a remedy (P) for the distress and depression of trade in England. His Lordship said he was adverse to the proposal for protection, and predicted that fho protective policy of some of the colonies would eventually fail.

LONDON, January 8. The Tay Bridge Disaster-
Fourteen bodies have been recovered from the Tsy, the scene of the recent disaster. Russia aid Germany. The rumoured massing or Russian troops on the German frontier is attracting a good deal of public attention in England and Europe. Bank Reserve. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £14,750,000.
The Union Bank.
The Union Bank has declared a dividend of 16 per cent, for the year.
