INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

[By Telegraph.] DUNEDIN, January 10,

The seventeenth match between Otago and Canterbury was commenced in Dunedin today. As regards the sixteen matches already played, Canterbury has scored nine, Otago six, and one was drawn. The team sent dcwn on the present occasion was not considered a strong one, but as little was really known of the capacities of its opponents, it was fel 1 that it was an open question as to which eleven had the best chance.

The match was played on the Caledonian ground, and began at noon. The weather was beautiful at the start, but shortly after it began to blow, and became overcast. The attendance of the public was but small. Ashby winning the toss, elected to take advantage of the fine wicket, and sent in Hartland and Alpe to the bowling of Paramor and McLennan. At the last ball of the third over McLennan caught Hartland off hia own bowling. One wicket down for 7 runs. J. Fowler joined Alpe, but the latter, after adding th r ee singles to his score, was beautifully caught in the slips by Paramor off McLennan—2—lo—2l. Aehby, the Canterbury captain, filled the vacancy, but his first ball he drove back into the hands of McLennan, who dropped it like a hot potato. Ashby signified his thanks by treating both bowlers to heavy punishment He then lifted McLennan out of bounds for 4. The scoring progressed rapidly, and when 30 was run up Con way n lieved McLennan, but Ashby, opening his shoulders, treated Paramor to a couple of tkyers, one on drive going right out of bounds. When 57 was up on the telegraph, Cook, a left hand bowler, relieved Piramor, These changes did not prove effectual, 70 soon appearing on board. At 1 30 the score stood at. 78 ; Aehby making 41, J. Fowler 16, both not out.

An adjournment to lurch was then made, and play was not resumed when our last telegram was despatched. The following is the score : CANTERBURY First Innings. Hartland. o and h McLennan ... ... 7 Alpe, c Paramor, b McLennan ... ... 10 J. Fowler, not oat ... ... 16 Ashby, not oat ... 41 Extras ... ... 4
