A POTATO PEST.

Mr R. Belcher, of Kaiapoi Island, has throe specimens of a grub very ■similar in size to the well-known cabbage plant grub (only darker in color, and not so sluggish in its habits) which is committing serious havoc amongst his potatoes this season. One ■mall potato was completely riddled by the ’three grubs in question, and he complains that in one paddock in particular (which was in grass for eight years, and broken up •for root crop in 1878) they are very thick. The superficial appearance of the plants ■affected is as if ripening prematurely, and on digging the grub is found attacking the tubers. Mr Belcher intends forwarding seme specimens to Dr. Yon Haast. Tho»o curious in these matters can see them at the Corn Ex--change this day.
