Some weeks ago she fied from him, and swam the Thames river, since which time the husband had consulted a Maori prophet about her fidelity, but the revelations being anything but satisfactory, he killed her. Accident. A man named Wheelan met with an accident this morning in the Alburnia mine by falling down the winze and breaking his leg. Once More on the StompSir George Grey intends soon visiting the Thames, and opening a lecturing campaign through the colony.
Templary. The Templar Grand Lodge closed its session last night, when a tea meeting was held. An Expensive Thrashing. John Murray, schoolmaster Jof Taupo, was fined 10s, and costs £B, for beating a boy in school, Mr Kenrick, R.M., censuring the school committee for not inquiring into the matter.

In many parts of Southland the turnip crop is an absolute failure, owing to the continued drought. The frosts have so damaged the potatoes that the yield cannot be large, and also so injured patches of grain as to lower seriously the large average yield reckoned upon a few weeks ago. John Harford, late steward of the May Queen, was yesterday committed to trial on four charges of larceny and remanded on three others, including the possession of housebreaking tools. In the accused’s box were found dark lanterns, files, and “niddy ” keys.

The Waimate Bush Fire CasesThe trial of the Waimate bush fire cases is fixed to take place in Dunedin on March 15th before special juries. Insolvencies. Five small insolvencies were filed this week. Suicide - A case of suicide by poisoning occurred in town yesterday afternoon, the victim being an old pensioner, fifty-seven years of age, named William Esmond. During the past few days he had been drinking, and yesterday obtained from the shop of Mr Neil, the herbaliet, four shillings’ worth of poison, saying that he wished to destroy some rats. After taking the poison, ha was brought to the Hospital where he died in an hour and a half after admission. He received his last remittance only about a week ago. Some time since he was separated from his wife. From statements made in the Hospital, it appears that he was jealous of her. AUCKLAND, January 8. Address to ConstituentsMr Moss, M.H.R., meets the Parnell electors at the beginning of next week. The Attorney-General and the De egateAn accident happened to Mr Grant, the Lincolnshire delegate. The Attorney-General was driving him in a buggy and pair, when he lost hold of the reins. Mr Grant jumped down, and while endeavouring to right matters the wheel of the buggy went over him, Dempsey’s MenAnother batch of Dempsey’s workmen got judgment at the Magistrate’s Court for wages due. * The Circus in Court. the zebras of Ohiarini’s circus on Onehunga road, plaintiff was awarded £3O and £l2 13s costs, with immediate execution. A Buoy Adrift. The schooner Marmion, from Titnarn, reports sighting off Kaikoura Peninsula, a conical red buoy, with a pole on top and a chain and block attached. Owing to the fog and sea she could not recover it. It is believed to be one of the Cook’s Straits cable buoys. _ GBAHAMSTOWN, January 8. The RotomahanaMr Gillom, Mining Registrar, and a passenger by the Botomahana on her trip to the Great Barrier, formerly a resident of the island, states that he warned the captain of the sunken rock on which the vessel subsequently struck, and that sh© was all along steered directly for it. Mysterious DeathA man named Croften, a steerage passenger by the steamer Star of the South, from Lyttelton, was lost during the passage here. He was last seen about 10.30 last night, when he retired to bed and was then quite sober. At eight o’clock this morning, he was missed, and no trace of him could be found. No cause can be attributed for his disappearance. A Break-down-The Star of the South sighted a steamer believed to be the Tui, bound for Wanganui, and to all appearances having broken down. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 8. Mr ParrisMr Parris left by steamer this morning for Wellington, the Government wishing to consult him on Native matters connected with this district. HOKITIKA, January 8. ElectionAt a special meeting, appointed by the Governor in Council for the election of county chairman for the ensuing year, held to-day, two candidates were nominated. Waitangi High, SchoolAt a meeting of the Waitangi High school governors to-day, a statement was laid on the table showing that their accumulated funds amounted to £4OO, but it was decided not to take any immediate steps towards building a school. The Valuation ListThe valuation list of the Oamaru municipality shows the rateable annual value of property to be £48,272. TIMAEU, January 8. The Harbour BoardThe Harbor Board to-day resolved to postpone levying any port duties on shipping for six months. They also resolved to reduce the rate for shipping wheat from 4s 6d to 4s per ton. The harbor master reported that two Auckland vessels and one American had sailed without returning springs, &0., supplied by the Board, and that a heavy loss must accrue in consequence. The secretary stated that ho had communicated with the Collector of Customs at Auckland on the matter, requesting him not to clear the vessels until the amount was paid. It was resolved, in future, to make the agents of vessels guarantee the cost of all such appliances before they were supplied. Public Meeting. A meeting of burgesses is called for tomorrow night, to consider whether a £60,000 Waterworks Loan should be raised. Timaru High SchoolMiss Jardino has been appointed Lady Superintendent of Timaru High School, out of twenty-six applicants. DUNEDIN, January 8. The Auckland Pas-angers-The remainder of the passengers by the ship Auckland were removed from Quarantine Island this forenoon, and their places occupied by the steerage passengers who arrived yesterday by the ship Marlborough. Annual Railway Passes. A deputation waited on Mr Oliver to-day *to suggest that annual railway passes should he issued, available over the Middle Island railways, at the rate of £SO each. Mr Oliver said he would consider the suggestion, but ■did not feel very favorably inclined towards it, as facilities for railway travelling were as .great as could be expected, and there was a possibility that the revenue might suffer.
