NEW YEAR'S DAY SPORTS.

ELLESMERE SPORTS, 1880. 'These annual sports tuck nlaco on the Recreation Reserve, on New Year’s Day. The improvements which had b- on made in the reserve by the Domain Board was most notice able. A large belt, about u chain and a-half wide, had hern fenced off, and part sown down in blue gums and part, planted with forest trees, ail of which Bcnmed to begrowing fairly. Substantial iron ga’es had been erected at the main entrances, go that the whole appearance of the reserve r-fl oto groat credit on the truste:s. Owing to the unpropitious appearance of the morning there was a much smaller attendance lhau usual, causing the first event to be put back fully two hours. Mr E. G. Sturdy again acted as chief score tary, and under bis excellent management every event rv:-s started with promptitude os far as the time between each was concerned. Mr W. Bishop iiclcd «e judge in tho horse races, and Mr W. K Lunn as starter, Messrs B. Buniuger aid E Bentley acting in the same capacity for the foot races. Willis’ Maori Queen (Wilson), 3 Won easily by Jack. A protest was entered by the owner of Terror on tho ground that Jack was not a district horse, which was allowed by the stewards. This race was a gift to Bluett’s Tommy, the pony coming in twenty yards ahead, after breaking each time he passed the crowd. 880 Yards Handicap for men ; seven entries. H. Freeman, 1 ; J. Bourn, 2. Durant and Allred Bourn cut out the running in this race for !ho elder Bourn, but he had done too much work, and bad to snocomb to Freeman after passing tho distance post, who won easily by four yards with plenty in hand. Hack Pace, 11 miles, tOst. up ; four entries. E. Bryan’s Lady Caledon, 1; j. Bradshaw’s Maori Girl, 2. Maori Girl had once more to cry ago to -Lady Caledon. The winner, as for as training was concerned, being simply perfection. Tilting in tho Ring ; nine entries. This resulted in a tie between W- Fagan and John Bourn, who divid&d the stakes. There were ten starters. Consolation Hack Race, half mile ; three entries. E. W. Osborne’s Miss Quail, 1; E. Bryan’s Lady Ffien, 2. This race was won oa the post, being the best race of the day Men’s Consolation Race of 100 yards; three entries. H. Corbett, 1; O. H. Ennis, 2. This concluded the day’s sports, the last race being started at twenty minutes past ■even o’clock. OXFORD SPOETS.

In consequence of the threatening look of the weather in the early morning, these sports were not so well patronized as last year. The ■ports were held on the usual site by the permission of Mr H. B. Johnston. It was just after twelve when the first race was started, and the last was not over till nearly eight. The following is the programme, with the results. Everything passed off quietly and everyone seemed to be thoroughly amused. The only events which did not fill were the race for women and the bullock race reversed : Boys’ Race, under 15, quarter-mile—W. Brown, 1 ; F. Gamman, 2. A protest was entered by A. Vincent against E. Hahn, but subsequently withdrawn. Girls’ Race, 100 yards, under 12; eight entries—E. Wilkie, 1; E. Marsh, 2. Running High Jump; three entries—C. Trotting Match, from tho Barracks to the Post-office, West Oxford; three entries—Philip Marsh’s horse, 1. SHEFFIELD AND WADDINGTON SPORTS. The annual sports were held on New Year’s Bay in a paddock adjoining Flanagan’s Hotel. The morning broke very threatening, but fortunately no rain fell after ten o’clock. Mr Benham kindly laid on tho ballast train from Kow&i Pass to Sheffield, which brought about sixty visitors. In addition to the following programme, Mr McNae was mesfc assiduous in getting off children’s races, scrambles, Ac. In the 220 yards race an unfortunate accident ■occurred, the starter, Mr Marky, putting a charge of powder in Mr Mcßeth’s ankle, which undoubtedly kept him from being .placed in the mile race. The following officers were on the ground during the day : —J edge, Mr Austin ; starter, Mr Marky; handicappers, Messrs McNae .-and Brown; secretary, Mr Love; stewards, Messrs Willis and Waddinglon. 'Quoit Mutch ; ten entries. This resulted in a -tie between Messrs Colthart and Flanagan, and they agreed to divide the stake Men’s Open Handicap Hurdle Race, 440 Yards; si* flights^hurdles—S. Grand Handicap Flat Race; throe events, 100, 200, and 440 yards. There were ten entries for this rs.ee. which gave good sport to the spectators. For tho 100 yards Simpson and Brown ran a dead heat, with Williams third. In the run off Brown won by barely throe inches; Simpson started from scratch, and Brown had two yards start. For tho 220 yards B. Brown, with a start of four yards, won >.y a yard. Simpson coming in second. Brown thus winning the handicap, Simpson taking second place, and Williams third. The East Malvern had it oil their own way, winning the first two tries.
