“LYTTELTON TIMES” SICK FUND SOCIETY.
The first annual meeting of the “ Lyttelton Times” Sick Fund Society was held on Saturday evening at Warner’s Hotel, Mr John Hebden, vice-president, in the chair. The committee’s report was read and adopted. From this it appeared that the amount to the credit of the general fund was £212 4s, that there were eighty-two adult subscribers and seven youths, that subscriptions to the amount of £lO9 8 i 6d had been received for the year, and the arrears were only £3 ; that £4O 10s been voted as sick allowances ; that the weekly income of the society was now £2 2a 9d, equal to £ll9 9n 81 per annum ; and that twemy shares in the Permanent Investment and Loan Association at a cost of £2OQ had been purchased with the funds. The report also contained the following recommendation: —“ That in the event of the death of a member, the new committee be authorised to vote a sum of money to hia relatives, in accordance with the circumstance* of the case, and the position of the funds. This it may be remarked is intended as the first stop towards the establishment of a widow and orphans* fund in connection with the society. When the society is a little older it muy be advisable to adopt a fixed scale of allowance.” A new rule in accordance with tho ab'vs suggestion was agreed to. The election of officers then to"k place, and resulted as follows : —Mr W. Re eves was re-elec ed patron, Mr R. A. L jughnan president, Mr J. Hobden vicepresident, Mr Wilkin treasurer, and Messrs W. Reeves and W. J. W. Hamilton trustees, Mr <3- Q-erard secretary. Committee —Messrs T. West, F. Hatch, F. East, T. Travis, Foster, A Williams, W. Lansley, C. Sr eesby, and H. Winohe-ter. A hearty vote of the. As was accorded to Mr Hamilton for the great trouble he had ti ken in the investment of the society’s funds, i'be services of the auditors, Messrs A. Williams and J. F. Wachsmmn were acknowledged by a hearty vote of thanks, and the business of the meeting concluded by a vote of thei'Vs to the vice-president, Me J. Hetjden, for id* services in the chair.
MR MASTERS AND HIS CONSTITUENTS. The “ Grey River Argus” of December 25 th Bays :—A gratifying testimony of the esteem in which Mr Masters, M. H.R., is held by the Grey mouth portion of his constituency was given last evening on the arrival of the s.s. Wanganui in port. It having been circulated during the day that Mr Masters would arrive from Westport in the steamer above mentioned, a largo crowd assembled on the wharf, and as soon as the boat was moored his Worship tiis Mayor jumped on board and welcomed Mr Masters on his return to Greymouth. He was deputed, said Mr Nancarruw, on behalf of the hon. member’s supporters in this portion of the electorate, to congratulate him on his return from the first session of Parliament, and to assure him that ho possessed the confidence of the electors, who thoroughly approved of his action and endorsed the line of policy he pursued. His supporters fully believed that he had acted in accordance with their wishes, and also that ho had fulfilled the pledges ho had made. Ho wuo returned when the railway question was at its height, and it was believed ho had done the best tor the district.
