RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr H. Blackett), Ors. Johnston. Ivory, Good, Stephens, Luxton, and Burt. A letter from the Colonial Secretary was read, in reply to an application from the Council for the appointment of a letter carr er tor Rmgiora, and pointing out the necessity for a new post and telegraph office in that borough, stating that the matter would receive the favorable consideration of the Government, and bo attended to as soon as funds will allow. In reply to inquiries made by the town clerk re slaughter house and pedlars’ licenses, the town clerk, Sydenham, wrote that in that borough no such licenses are issued. A communication from the town clerk, Kaiapoi, was to the same effect. A letter was received from Mr P. McGrath, stating that ha had omitted to inform the Council that he would expect to have the land fenced on both sides of the road he had agreed to give to the Council. It was decided that Mr McGrath be informed that the Council is willing to do the same, and the clerk was instructed to get the conveyance for the road prepared at once. Mr R. Aherne wrote asking, on behalf of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge of Oddfellows, M.IL, for a remission of the rates on their property in the borough. Cr. Good moved—‘‘That the Council cannot agree to remit the rates in this instance.” Cr. Johnston seconded. Cr. Burt moved, and Cr. Ivory seconded —“ That the application be granted.” On looking over the clauses in the Act bearing on the rem’ssion of rate;, the Mayor ruled that it was not in the power of the Council to remit those of any public body. Or Burt then moved “That the motion remitting the rates of the Rangiora Literary Institute be rescinded, and the institute committee be called upon to pay the some.” Cr. Stephens seconded, and it was carried. The town clerk reported that the receipts for the past month had been £27 7s, and the balance to the credit of the borough, £l2l 18r 6d. The monthly pay-sheet, amounting to £SB 2s 41, was passed for payment. A draft of the by-law rc cost of channeling, kerbing, and asphalting footpaths, was laid before the Council and approved. The town clerk reported that the rent of reserve was in arrears. Cr. Burt, moved—“ That the lessee be called upon to pay the rent duo at once.” Carried, The town clerk was instructed to make immediate application for the same, and take proceedings in default of payment. Cr. Burt moved—“ That the Postmaster-General be thanked for his promise of a letter carrier and new post-office for the boroagh.” Carried. A vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding terminated the proceedings.
