CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

The committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association met yettordaj afternoon at the usual hour. Present Mr J. T. Ford, chairman, and Messrs A. Duncan, W. Henderson, W. Norman, H. Washbourn, J. Walls, P. Cunningham, W. Holly, and Gilmour. A letter was received from Mr S. Challenge complaining that certain exhibits, the entrance fees for which had been paid at the late show, did not share the privilege of competition, seme not even having been opened. It was resolved, upon the suggestion of Mr Duncan, to reply to Mr Challenge to the effect that the committee could not interfere with the decisionof the judges unless brought under their notice in the form of a protest. From Mr Hoag, a communication was received, stating that his brood mare Gipsy, which received first prize in class 4, had proved not to be in foal, contrary to the belief entertained by himself and others at the time. The effect of this was to deprive Mr Boag of the first prize, and Petersen’s prize. Messrs Fleming and Hedley took first prize, the second prize going to Mr Boag’s highly commended mare Maggie. A report from the sub-committee, appointed to deal with protests in reference to

the lease of booths, was read, recommending a concession to Messrs Olliver and 100. to the extent of £lO. It appears that the site obtained by Olliver and Co. was not that they had contracted to lease, and had thereby sustained a loss. Correspondence was read in reference to the confusion attendant on deceptive prices attached to exhibits, referring especially to the case of broadcast sowing machines, in connection with which there were certain extras, which apparently were included in |the price attached to the machines exhibited. Messrs Miles, Hassal and Co. had purchased one of these machines on such an understanding, and on discovering the mistake refused to carry out the purchase. The machine referred to was that of Messrs Reid and Guy. The subcommittee reported on the matter, after having taken evidence, to the effect that the impression prevailed that the extras were included in the exhibit by Messrs Reid and Gray, but for which they would have been disqualified. It was pointed out that Messrs Reid and Gray should have an opportunity of entering into an explanation on the matter. Mr Henderson moved—“ That a copy of the sub-committee’s report bo forwarded to Messrs Reid and Gray, asking them to show cause why it should not be passed.” Seconded by Mr Cunningham and carried. The next business was the appointment of a time and place for the trial of reapers and binders. Some discussion ensued touching the selection of a site, the opinion being expressed that it should bo as near town as possible, and that no time should be lost in the matter. Eventually it was resolved to advertise for a paddock, to be as near the town as possible. The ram fair was appointed to take place on the 11th and 12th of March next, and that advertisements be inserted in the newspapers of principal towns. A committee was appointed. Certain accounts were passed for payment, and the committee then adjourned.
