THEATRE ROYAL.
Thera was an excellent house at the Theatre Royal last night, on the repetition of “ The Man from America.” The piece, though abounding in sensational, not to say improbable, elements, is sufficiently exciting and amusing to create a largo amount of interest. The trial scene in the second act, though verging on the burlesque of a legal investigation, at least before an English or rather an Irish Judge, brought down thunders of applause, though perhaps not in the most legitimate way. Mr Wallace was the life and soul of the piece, though by no
means necessary to the plot, and he was well supported by Miss Ada Hester, Messrs Boothman, Joyce, Kede, and the stock company generally. The piece will be repeated tonight. Next Tuesday night is set apart for the benefit of Miss Ada Lester. Apart from the claims which this lady has upon the patrons of the drama as an accomplished artiste, who since her first appearance in Christchurch has legitimately won her way by sheer force of merit into the good graces of theatre goers, a most attractive bill has been provided for the occasion of her farewell appearance, prior to her departure for England. The first piece is Tobin’s famous comedy “The Honeymoon,” in which Miss Lester will appear as Juliana, Mr Hoskins as Duke Aranza, and Mr J. J. Wallace as the Mock Duke. The performance will wind up with a good farce, entitled “A man without a head,” in which Mr Wallace will sustain the chief character.
