His Etc-Haney and suite arrived about 12.30, when he was choerod by the public, the band playing “God Save the Q.ueon.” Tho grand stand was crowded. Derby, of 100 sovs, added to a sweep of 10 sovs each. Mr "Walters’ Libeller ... ... (French) 1 Mr V'aloasley’s Maid of Athol (Taylor) 2 Libeller mads tho running, and won in a canter, by two lengths. Publicans’ Purse, of GO sovs; amount accruing from sweep to goto second horse; weight for age. Winner of Railway Plato c rrying 71b extra. Distance one mile. Mr Ray’s Mozitaua Oat ll;b ... (Owner) 1 Blr Walker’s Billingsgate, Sat 41b, including Vlb ... ... (Clifford) 2 Mr Bnckland’s Omega, 9at ... (Matthews) 3 Belting—6 to 4on Maritana, oto 4 against Billingsgate. The 11 ig fell to a good start; Billingsgate jumped off with a lead, but after a hundred ysr-'s bo war .pulled back, Omega and Maritana racing for tbs lead. After coming through the cutting Billingsgate ran up to the loaders. At the half-mile ptsl Omega fell back. At a qu-liter of a mile from home tho colt got in front. Entering tho straight the mrc challenged, and won by one and a half lengths. Time—l min. 45secs. Selling Race, 50 s >vs, with sweep of 3 sovs ; weight for ago. Distance, one mile and a distance. Mr Walters’ piscatorious, 7st lllbs (Hodgson) 1 Mr Leonard's Kenilworth, sst 81hs (Taylor) 2 Mr Donne’s Sinking Fund, Bst lllbs (Nolan) 3 Awalea Gleufern, and Introduction also ran. Batting—2 to 1 agst Piscatorious and Sinking Find, 3 to 1 on Kenilworth. After throe falsa starts Piscatorious jumped off with tho lead, and after mating tho running won in a cantor. Auckland Racing Club Handicap, 203 sovs. with a swoop of 3 siva, amount to go to the second horse ; 1 } miles. Mr Variance’s Lara, Gst Gib (Webster) 1 Blr Walter.-’ Hippocampus, 7st 41b (Reason) 2 Mr Butler’s Laertes. Git 21b (Butle-) 3 Templeton, Ariel, Blerlin, Rata, Gillie Galium, Yattapa, and Loch Lomond also ran. Betting—2 to 1 agst Lira, 4 to 1 agst Laertes, G to 1 agst Templeton and Ariel, 8 to 1 agst Hippocampus, 100 to 3 agst any other. Tho dig fell to a fair start. Lira and Loch Lomond rushed to the front. Hippo on passing the stand evaded tho ruck, and Lara had a slight load of Loch Lomond. They ran in this order until half a mila from horns. Lara Isd into tho straight, followed by Hippo and Laertes, Loch Lomond having died awav. Hip? a rondo an effort but failed to roach Lara, who won bv a length and a half. Time, 3 min 10-ec. The Hack Hurdle Rico was won by Nettle. Grand Stand Han dicap of 100 sovs, with a Sweep of 3 sovs, to go to second horse. Lira, Gst 71b (Webster) 1 Hr Medner’s Balmoral, Gat 51b (Kaiser) 2 Mr Leonard’s Malvern... ... ... ... 3 Billingsgate, Laertes, Daisy, Omega, and Xantippe, also ran. Betting—6 to 4 on Lara, 2 to 1 against Billingsgate, 3 to 1 against Laertes, 10 to 1 against Balmoral. On entering the cutting Lira had tho load, with Malvern, Billingsgate, and Balmoral close up. On entering tho straight they closed with him, and tho four made a slashing race to the distance post, when Balmoral challenged thorn and got his head in front. A hundred yards from homo Lara came along and made a dead heat of it, Malvern a good third. Balmoral was afterwards scratched, and Lara walked over. Tho racing is considered the host that has taken place here. The totalisators at work or the field were well patronised. KAIAPOI SPORTS AND RACES. The annual sports on New Year’s Day, held in Mr F. Brsustow’s ptddock on the Boach road, were this year as successful as ever they hare beer. Although tho weather as tho morning opened was very wet, yet towards noon it chared up, and the races ■ware carried out under most favorable circumstances. The grass on tho ground was a trifle long, except on the running courses, which h d boon mown, and on the threea carter mile oval course laid out for the horse races. There was an unusually large attendance of the public, and tho proceedings passed ever in the pleasantest manner possible. The veteran officers of the sports carried out their duties with satisfaction. The athletic sports wore managed by an excellent sub committee, and three or four of the gentlemen on the committee disposed of a largo supply of firstclass toys to the children in various races. All the young folks were provided with refreshments free. Mr Burnip presided at tho booth, and there were the usual stalls. Every race was well contested. Play began wilh the stseploohaso over eight fences, for which the Cid was greatly fancied, and Kate also bad a call in the batting, but Prince, a noted herso in tho Ohcka district, beat all the cracks, to the surprise of all. Six camo up fur the Hack Hurdle race, in which those who know Te Kooti predicted his winning. An equal number wore presented in the Cup race, over two miles flat. Rocket and Nina were both favourites, but Prince was landed winner amid great cheering, Moilk a good second. Eorotop was favourite for the Pony race, which was gamely won by Little Polly. Moilk and Miss Council made the running for the Publican’s Purse, and although the latter was second, her owner was disqualified, on a protest, from taking the prize, sho having previously won over £2O of public money. Eleven trotters faced the starter, Victoria, Clipper, and Unknown having tho preference. Clipper, well ridden by bis owner, won a capital race without breaking, Quickstep being second. The Consolation Race went to the lot of Jack, Cid second. Miss Council third. Jack was protested against, and, as ho and Miss Council had previously won over £2O in an advertised stake, Cid end Rocket were placed first and second.

Collins’ Prince, aged ... (Owner) 1 Hr H. Scott’s Cid, aged ... (Kittenburgh) 2 Mr A. McQui'.ian’s Te Kooti, aged (Keith) 3 Hr Murfit’s Kate, Mr Hawior’a Purakanui and Mr G. Weston’s The Boy also ran. First lime round Kate and The Boy had the advantage. In the second lap, Cid and Prince had gone tip, Parukanui last. Nearing homo, Prince was sent along and won by two lengths, with Cid second and Te Kooti third. (Havis) 2 Mr Lynskey’s Hick Turpin (W. Lynsky) 3 Hr Humphries’ Unknown, Hr Scott’s Pocket, and Mr Collins’ Nelly also ran. Te Kooti and Unknown went away, and kept well together, Tommy and Diok Turpin coming up at the lust, tho former taking second place. Kaiapoi Cur; distance, two miles; weight for ago. First prize, £ 10 ; second, riding whip and save stake. Mr H. Collins’Prince, aged ... (Owner) 1 Hr Bckor’s Moiik, 3 yra ... (Bcker) 2 Mr Scott’s Cid, aged ... __ (Kittenburgh) 3 Mr McQuillan’s Nina, Hr F. Hack’s Len, and Mr Scott’s Socket also ran. Leaving the start and passing tho rails the first time Cid was leading, with Rocket and Nina in attendance, Moiik lying next. At the last half-mile Prince went to the front, Moiik (hard ridden) second, and in this order they come in. The distance between Prince and Moiik at the finish was about two chains, tho result being announced by repeated ohesrs. Pont Pace (not ever 14 hands) —Histaneo one mile. First prize, e£s ; second, save stake. Mr Lynskey’s Polly (W. Lynskey) 1 Mr Herrltt’s Foretop (Harding) 2 Mr G. A. Tyler’s Di k Turpin (Humphries) 3 Mr Peed’s Black Nob and Mr Palmer’s Kate also ran. Mr Parnham effected a capital start, and tho pace to tho finish was at a very high apeed. Polly led all the way and won by three lengths, Forotop being hotly pressed in tho pursuit. Turpin proved the best out of the remainder, and was landed third. Publicans’ Puese (for throe-year-olds)— weights, Bst ; distance, one mile and a half. First prize, .£5 ; second, riding whip. Mr F. Bekor’s Moiik (Beker) 1 Mr Heed’s Miss Council (Weston) 2 Mr F. C. Hack’s Len (Harding) 3 Mr Bowie's Heception and Mr Tyler’s Farewell also ran. Passing the rails the first time Moiik was leading, with Lon at the loin. Farewell fell
and dropped out of the hunt; Deception bolted inside. Moilk was brought in a winner •vy a short length, Miss Council second, Len third. The second horse was disqualified from second place, haying won over £2O in one stake. Trotting Race (Handicap), distance, two miles. First prize, £□; second, riding whip, vnlui £1 Is. Mr G. S. Palmer’s Clipper, from scratch (Owner) 1 Mr McQuillan’s Quickstep, 100yds (A. Keith) 2 Mr G. A. Tyler’s Unknown, 50yds (Wilson) 3 Mr Scott’s Tom (100yds), Mr Hawk on’s Jack (100yds), Mr Weston’s The Boy (100yds), Blr Hawker’s Dandy (103yds), Mr Morling’s Victoria (scratch), Mr William’s Polly (I2oyda), Mr Humphries’ Kafooselnm (50yds), Blr Lynskey's Jack (100yds), also ran. In the first lap Quickstep was leading, with The Bov second, Clipper third ; in the second time round Clipper came to the fore, with Quickstep well up, The Boy foiling out. Unknown also came up to Ihe third place, end in this order the race was finished, Clipper winning wilh plenty to spare. Consolation Race (Handicap for beaten horses). Distance 11 miles. Jack wos tho favourite, and won easily, but wai disqualified, having won over £2O previously. Cid was a good second, Bliss Council third, but also disqualified for second place, and Rocket was put second. ATHLETIC SPOUTS. Flat race (for men) ; distance one mile. _ First prizs, £2 ; second, 10s. Throe entries. E. Kehiler ... ... ... ... 1 F. Storer ... ... ... ... 2 A. Newport also ran. The latter led half the distance, when Kehiler put on a spurt and won easily. Flat race (Handicap) ; distance 410 yards ; for members of the Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade, in uniform, with helmets. First prize, £2; second, 10s. Five competitors. 13. Thorne 1 13. Baker ... ... ... ■■■ 2 VV. Heuwood, P. Bate, and *l, Monk also ran. Bate and Thorne had five yards start ; Thorne was never passed. Flat Race (handicap), distance, 890 yards. First prize, £2 ; second, 10s. Three competitors. A. Jones 1 E. Storer ... ... ... ... 2 A. Newport also ran, and had bis yards start; he kept the lead half way, when Jones collared him, and won with apparent ease. Old Men’s Race (handicap), over forty years, distance, 200 yards; one yard allowed for every year over forty' ; oldest competitor to start at scratch. First prize, £t; second, cup. value 10s. Four competitors. J. Walsh (61) 1 G. Fisher (54) 2 C. McGrath (45) and T. Butler (50) also ran. Walsh had the advantage at start, and wen easily. A good race resulted between Fisher and McGrath for second place. Flat Race (for men), distance, 440 yards. First prize, £1 ; second, value 10s. Six ran. E. Kehiler 1 E Storer ... 2 A. Jones, M. Hawkins, J. Doggett, and R. Hayman also competed. Hawkins led, when he was collared by Kehiler, who won by some distance. There was a good race for second place. District Flat Race, 220 yards. First prize, £1; second, ss. Three entered. A. Jones ... ... ... ... 1 E. Storer ... ... ..._ ... 2 J. Gunton also ran, and led till close on the post, when ho was passed by the others.
