ORIGINAL POETRY.

ROMANCE. Shs sat on a mountain; the crags o’er her head. Low down, ’neath her feet, the ocean lay spread. From out of its surges there rose a dim cry, And she turned to the west her blue mystical eye. " O, Daughter of Beauty, who, all the day long, From morning till evening once trilled the gay song. Whose words were a wonder, a moving d elight. And Paradiss opened to man’s weary sight. 44 Now silent thou gazest upon the dark sea, And makest thy home where the sea birds should be ; Dejected thon sittest, of sorrow the bride, Sing, dearest, sing !” the mermaiden cried. Melodious there sounded across the dark wave. The answer which Beauty’s own daughter then gave, The mariner heard as he sailed to the west. Where the sunset’s deep glory illumed ocean’s crest 44 Once men tender bosomed—their hearts fall of ruth, Loved Romance, and told me in words the sweet truth. But now they despise me, and treat me with scorn, They Jove me no longer and leave me forlorn.” 44 O, heed them not, dearest, nor be thou oast down. For thine are Earth’s blossoms and Heaven’s starry crown, To thee is no loss, dear, the loss is to men. Who losing thee once, can ne’er win thee again.” One moment a light, mellow, splendid, divine, Like a gleam from the half-opened door of a shrine, Made Matrons the gloaming: but scarce had it birth Ere it died, and thick shadows oppressed the fair earth, C.
