[retttbr's telegrams.] LONDON, December 20. Frightful Railway Accident —200 Persons (Drowned. During a heavy gale the bridge over the Tay was partially destroyed. The train proceeding from Edinburgh to Dundee, while crossing shortlj afterwards, fell through the casing of the bridge into the river. Au enormous loss of life ensued. Exact particulars have not yofc been received, but it is feared that 200 persons wore drowned. The Empress Eugenie. The Empress Eugenie proceeds to Zululand in February. [MELBOURNE AGE " SPECIAL."] LONDON, December 29. The Afghan War. The Afghans attempted to surprise the cantonments at Sherpur. The British were, however, forewarned, and replied by a destructive cannonade with great havoc. The loss of the Afghans is estimated at 20,000. They tried to storm the entrenchments, but after two days' fighting, they retreated to the hills. The cavalry is pursuing them, which increased the panic. General Roberts has reoccupied the Bala Hissar without any assistance, and is removing large quantities of gunpowder from the city. The Afghan loss is enormous. It is believed that a general dispersion of the tribes will end the combined opposition to the British. Mahomed Jan, who commanded the rebels, escaped. LONDON, December 26.

The Afghan WarGeneral Roberts reports an engagement, ending in a completo victory over the Afghans round Cabul. The British losses woro, fivo killed and thirty wounded. Ho rooccupied Cabul on Thursday. The loaders have managed to escape.
