No one really knows the extreme limit of human error till he has tried shooting the long bow. Becently 07er two hundred people recognised this fundamental fact—some evidently for the first time—at Spruce Lawn. A thref-foot target, only sixty feet off, is a very inviting object. No reasonable man thinks of missing it the first time he shoots : he only doubts which of the inner colors he shall spot. He shoots, and his arrows befiave most unaccountably; they ascend into tho heavens above, they plnnge ii-.to the earth Jbeneath, they Eeek all eorts of collateral objects, but never once strike that broad cxpanss of canvass spread out before him in the most offensive colors of the rainbow. As tho beginner begins, so he continues. He shoots a week, and sees no improvement ; he shoots another week, and does worse than the first ; then, if he live?, and gives bis whole soul to it, he slowly grows into an archer. In fact, the bowmjn ought to have begun in tbe early geologic ages with the "saurians" (lizards as large, long, and thick-skinned as a line of meetinghouse sheds), and "g:ow up with the country." Not all can afford the time for this ; tut tbe bow is an instrument with which, to copy the language of an accordion advertisement, " the performer very soon Irer.rnn to please himself and to amuse his friends. —" Litchfield Ir.quirer."
