[PEEBB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, December 24. A Case of Libel. The issues are settled in Chambers in the case of Webb y. Edgecombe. The action is for libel. Plaintiff and defendant are newspaper proprietors, formerly of Poverty Boy and Tanranga. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 24. Hill’s Case—A Second Jury Failed to Agree. In Hill’s case for indecent assault the second jury were locked up all night, and this morning were discharged without finding a verdict. The Judge then ordered that the prisoner should be again indicted for the same charge at the next criminal sittings of the District Court, on the 22nd January next. The opinion of many is that no jury here will be found to agree, and that the case should be removed to another district. WELLINGTON, December 24. Perjury Cases. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, the case of P. K. Watty, for alleged perjury in a declaration before the Deputy Comissioncr of Stamps, was dismissed. Another charge of the same nature is now being heard. Building Society. The annual meeting of the Wellington Building Society was held last night. The report and balance-sheet showed satisfactory results. Inquest. The Fine Arts. The ceremony of presenting prizes to the successful exhibitors in the recent display of pictures, held under the auspices of the Society of Arts, was performed to-day by Bishop Oowie. The prize winners were Mrs Kohn, Mrs Kennett Watkins, Mies Constance Horne, and Messrs O. E. K. Campbell, Quales, Bloomfield, A. Sharpe, J. McMahon, and G. E. Whitmore. Mora ImmigrantsG. E. Arrival of Bishop SteinArchbishop Stein, the new Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, obtained a public reception at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to-night. It was crowded to excess. Addresses were presented to him from the clergy, the laity, the Christian Doctrine Society, and Hibernian Benefit Society. He spoke in reply ut some length. He hoped to have the co-operation of the clergy and laity in his work, and that the latter would guard the faith they had received, and hand it down to their children. As to the education question it was difficult to say much about it, and he would refrain at present. The “ Messiah.” The Auckland Choral Society gave a rehearsal of the “Messiah,” in the Choral Hall. A Stabbing Case. Stephen Horne was committed for trial for stabbing his wife, also for a felonious assault on a man named Raymond, who endeavored to protect the woman. Boil was refused. The RegattaThe Harbor Board declined to make a grant to the regatta fund on the ground that the expenditure woe contrary to law.

GRAHAMSTOWN, December. 23. Steps are being taken to receive the Minister of Public Works, who is expected to visit the Thames in January. WELLINGTON, December 23. Fatal Accident. A fatal accident occurred on the tramway to day, a young man named James Robertson, a cadet, employed in the Telegraph Department, being killed instantaneously. It appears deceased was riding in the first carriage, and on attempting to get off was thrown under the wheels. The body was greatly mangled. Immediately the accident was observed the train stopped, and medical assistance was procured, but was of no avail, life being extinct. Robertson was 19 years of age and universally respected. Colonel ReaderColonel Reader has been appointed Commissioner of Armed Constabulary for the whole colony. Cricket. The cricket match between Wanganui and Wellington commenced this morning. The schooner Jane Anderson, owned by Mr Keith Ramsay, of Dunedin, went ashore on the Mnnawatu bar while being towed out by the s.s. Huia yesterday afternoon. She is very badly damaged, and likely to become a total wreck. The vessel is insured for £BSO and the cargo for £350 in the National. TIMARU, December 23. Geraldine County Council. The Geraldine County Council to day resolved to bring the Act into force in the face of the expressed dissent of three fourths of the electors. The Weather. The weather still continues grand for the crops. OAMARU, December 23. Forgery. Henry Pell, charged with forging the signature of Wilson and Co., Dunedin, to three cheques, was committed for trial. DUNEDIN, December 23. Mr J. Brogden. Mr James Brogden, of the firm of John Brogden and Sons, is on his way to the colony in connection with matters in dispute between that firm and the Government. “ H-M-S- Pinafore " In the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Macdonald, Williamson’s attorney, obtained injunctions against Messrs Ogden, Towle, and McLean of the Juvenile Troubadours, with costs to restrain them from performing “ H.M.S.
