CANTERBURY RIVERS.
The Waimakariri was heavily flooded on Tuesday in both branches. The only overflow of consequence was at Chaney’s, between there and Treleaven s Hotel, on the North road. A large body of water found ite way along the new channel through Stewart's gully. The railway works appeared to have been thoroughly protected, and none of the found its way into Irishman’s flat. The mam stream of the river was within four feet of the top or the piles in the South. Waimakariri railway bridge. The latest telegram from Bealey to Kaiapoi, at 230 p.m., ran— 1 '• Rivers falling. Weather still showery.” At the time of closing our northern dispatch, the river was nearly bank and bank, but many persons expected it to rise some inches at high water, about midnight. The strong N.W. wind was forcing the flood water to sea with surprising velocity. The Rakaia also was very much swollen yesterday morning. The river, however, was not nearly so high as in the flood of last summer. An immense body of water is also going down the iiangitata, but so far all the bridges are safe. It should be stated, however, that the Rakaia was still rising last evening.'
