The latter was recently insured for £4OO in tho Norwich Union. The fire extended to Everett’s grocery store, which was burnt to tho ground. Stevens’ private house caught fire, but was saved by the exertions of the spectators. Several other shops had a narrow escape. A large quantity of stock was destroyed by removal and water. The Fire Brigade rendered good service, but the supply of water was bad. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 22. The Ho pilal ScandalJamcs Hall, Hospital steward, charged with indecent assault, was again arraigned. Several witnesses were examined, and the trial adjourned till to-morrow. MunicipalAt a Compensation Court to-day, before His Honor tho Chief Justice and two experts, several claims were argued for damages for loss alleged to have been sustained by the lowering of a certain footpath. The Bealey FloodedThe Christchurch coach, due here on Saturday last, has not arrived yet. It is detained at the Bealey, with fourteen passengers and a large mail. It has been blowing a gale of wind here for four days, with heavy rain, and is still blowing and raining. All traffic by land and sea is stopped. The rivers are flooded and show no sign of abatement. POUT CHALMERS, December 22. Death of Dr. G- T- E- Moffatt. The master of the ship Taranaki reports that on November 15th, at II a.m., in lat. 38 S., long. 6 W., Dr. George Thomas Bard Moffatt, ship’s surgeon, went aloft for a wager with a saloon passenger, and on coming down over the main top gallant yard missed his hold, struck the rattlins, and fell into the sea. The ship was going about six knots, and there was a very rough sea on, the vessel wearing heavily. The helm was instantly put down and the yards brought aback. A boat was got out and pulled in the direction which it was thought Dr. Moffatt was, but after searching for an hour without avail she returned. DUNEDIN, December 22. The Pri- e of SugarA telegram, dated 11th December, has been received from Mauritus, reporting a further advance of £4 per ton in all sugars. The Harbour Board. The Harbor Board have appointed Messrs Ramsay, Fish, Walcott, Houghton, and Captain Logan, to confer with the engineer as to whether any works at present in progress can be discontinued, pending the Board receiving Parliamentary authority to borrow money. Unseating of the MayorAt the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, Mr W. L. S.mpson, 8.M., delivered judgment, on the petition of Messrs Walter and two other ratepayers, praying that Mr H. S. Pish, junior, be ousted from the position of Mayor of Dunedin, on the ground that he was sub-contractor for the new Town HalL The judgment unseated Mr Fish, and declared Mr Walters to be next on the poll, and duly elected. EireA house belonging to Mr Molleson, situated at Otarea, was burned down on Friday. Two boys were arrested on suspicion. The house was uninhabited, and isolated. It was insured for £2OO in the Sun office.
