CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
A meeting of the Board of Governors was held at 3 p.m. yesterday. Tho following members wore present ; —Mr William Montgomery (chairman), tho Primate, Rev. O. Fraser, Messrs Hamilton, Fereday, Yeel, Tanored, and Malet. The Chairman said that tho principal business before the Board would be the consideration of the notice of motion by Rev. Mr Fraser, as follows:—“That in order to promote the object for which the College was established, of providing superior education for all classes of the community, the Board resolves that students may be allowed to attend all the classes of the College for a payment of £lO a year for three years, or for one payment of £30.”
Rev. C. Fraser, in moving tho resolution, said that he would be in favor of referring tho question to the College committee, with tho understanding that they would report fully upon the matter. He might say that the amount fixed by him was quite sufficient at home to pay the professors, who were men of high standing. Again, they must offer some inducement to parents to keep their children back from entering offices and taking employment in offices, &e., instead of making the University course only a matter of minor corsideration. Another thing was that if they adopted this resolution the professors would receive £IOO per annum more for the new year. It might be also that the school might pass from under tho supervision of tho Board, and come more into the hands of the professors. He would, therefore, ask leave to add to his resolutijn that the motion be referred to the College committee, with instructions to report upon the subject. Mr Malet seconded the motion pro forma.
Tha Chairman suggested that the resolution proposed by the Her. O. Fraser should be withdrawn, and a simple resolution requesting the College committee to consider the whole subject of fees and report to the Board, substituted. Mr Malet agreed with the chairman that the College committee should be asked to report upon the subject of fees. He thought it would be subversive of all discipline to grant the privilege to a student to walk into any lecture room he liked. Besides, there was this to bo considered, that a difficulty would arise as to the apportionment of the fees. After some further discussion, Eev. Mr Fraser withdrew his resolution. On the motion of Mr Malet, the Board wont into committee to consider the reports of the College committee and the Agricultural school committee. On resuming, the Board adopted the resolutions passed in committee. The College committee was instructed to provide the noce-sary library accommodation for the Professor of Classics.
