San Francisco Mail. —The Southern portion of the mail will be brought on by the s.s. Penguin, which is due here to-morrow. The mail left Picton for Wellington this morning at ten o’clock. Attempted Suicide.— A man named Edwards, who was reported to haye attempted suicide at Eaikoura a few days since by taking a quantity of chloridyne, and who afterwards cut his throat with a penknife, was brought from there this morning by the steamer Jane Douglas, for treatment at the hospital. Lyttelton Reoatta, 1880.—At a meeting of the Lyttelton Regatta sub-committee last night, it was resolved to call for tenders from licensed victuallers up to the 23rd inet., for catering luncheon and refreshments on board the flagship Lady Jocelyn on the day of the regatta. Accident. —As a spring cart belonging to Mr Mulligan was being driven to-day down High street, one of the wheels come off, and the shock threw the driver into the bottom of the cart. The horse being startled set off at a galop, but the boy stuck gallantly to the reins, and managed to pull up the animal after a run of about a hundred yards. On inspection it was found that the cart was not injured, the accident happening through the nuts of the axle bolts not being properly secured. Resident Maoistbate’s Coubt.—At the Court to-day Ching Kong, a Chinaman, was charged with violently assaulting Ah Chu, another Chinaman. The prosecutor said the defendant had struck him with a tomahawk and cut his coat, and his shoulder slightly. The accused was fined 40s, and coats £3 7s.’ Chiaeini’s Royal Italian Circus.— This circus will open this evening its season of two weeks. The tents are erected in the paddock opposite the Palace Hotel, Gloucester street. The press has spoken most favourably of the entertainment on its progress so far through the colony, and no doubt it will prove an equal sucoess in Christchurch as elsewhere. The Attempted Suicide. —The Portuguese, Joseph Barreira, who attempted suicide on Tuesday last, is now out of danger, though still in a very exhausted state from the effects of the poison and the powerful remedies used to counteract it. A Fatal Mistaie.— By an unfortunate accident Mr Henry Allan, contractor, who was very well known in Christchurch, met with his death yesterday evening. It appears that Mr Allan had boon ailing for some months, and was under Dr. Townend’s treatment, On Wednesday afternoon, at halfpast four o’clock, the hour for taking his medicine, he swallowed a dose of liquid ammonia, mistaking it for the medicine which had been prescribed for him. Assistance was obtained as soon as the unfortunate error was discovered, and Dr. Townend, in consultation with Dr. Prins, dH all they could for the sufferer. Their efforts, however, were unavailing, and Mr Allan, after suffering great pain, expired yesterday afternoon at four o’clock. It is not probable that an inquest will bo held, as the gentlemen who attended the deceased will doubtless certify to the cause of death. Railway Band. —The usual performance in Cathedral Square by the Railway Baud last night attracted a very large concourse of visitors. A capital programme of music was gone through most efficiently.
