THE CO OPERATIVE LAND, LABOR, AND STORE COMPANY.
To the Editor of the Glole. Sib, —I have no doubt your courtesy will allow the spaco necessary to correct a few false impressions that seem to cloud your mind on tho subject of our telegrams. _ _ First. The workmen sent their petition to Sir George G-rey on 17th October last, expecting that as our elected servant he would instantly tako steps to give the Ministry power to make a contract with any company for defence, police, roads, railways, and settlement of tho district in small farms. Finding that nothing was done, wo joined into a brotherhood, 6ent up delegates, and telegraphed that a law should be passed to give Government power from the people. We referred to the history of New Zealand, where the rich actually got land "without law," but we wished to set them a better example, and to do this " within law." We saw £330,000 voted for defence, £357,000 voted for rails on this land, £151,000 for bridges and roade. This would furnish the ;meansof ;coloris:ng the whole district without asking for charity, and would absorb the constables. If the Government decline we shall hold them responeible for wasting that very money in war which oould be better spent on farming. By request of the committee of the committee these explanations are forwarded for the public good. Yours &0., J. W. TREAD WELL, Hon. Sec.
