SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.

ST. ALBANS MAIN SCHOOL. The annual distribution of prizes to the children attending the above school took place on Friday afternoon at two o’clock. The school presented a gay appearance, the walls being very prettily decorated with flowers, and on the table were the prizes about to be presented. Several friends and parents of the children were present. The chairman of the district (Rev. T. Flavell) presided, and said ho had no doubt they were anxiously waiting for two things—the prizes and the holidays—he would therefore not detain them long. He hoi much pleasure in telling them that not only were the teachers satisfied with the progress they had made during the past year, but that the Inspector also was satisfied. Ho hoped that would bo an incentive to renewed exertion. His first duty would bo to present two Government certificates to Robert Thompson and Ernest Archer for good attendance, they having been present both morning and afternoon of every school day during the year. The distribution of good conduct and class prizes then took place. After which, the prizes for sowing given by Mrs E. H. Rhodes and Mrs J. T. Peacock, wore allotted. Some excellent; map work was exhibited on the walls of the school. A noticeable feature also was a group of pencil drawings by the scholars, one of which was considered so good as to deserve a frame, and having been framed and mounted was returned to the artist, Andrew Brabner, as a prize. A prize was also given to P. Soanes for the best kept garden in the school plantation. The prize givers wore Mrs R. H. Rhodes, Mrs J. T. Peacock, Rev. T. Flavell, Mr T. Gordon, Mr Hawker, and Mr Mitchell, The children gave three hearty cheers for the givers of the prizes, the head master, lady teachers, pupil teachers, St. Albans School, and a pleasant holiday, after which thev dispersed to reassemble on the 26th January, 188 °.
