[By Telegraph.] Captain Jackson Barry is organising emigration clubs in the chief centres of population of the United Kingdom. He has held successful meetings at Walworth to promote emigration to New Zealand. Prince Leopold opened Firth College, Sheffield, on October 20th. The schism in the ranks of tho Home Rulers, caused by Mr Parnell’s scheme for a National Convention, is widening considerably. Additions are to be made to the defences of Portsmouth on the land side. John Blackwood, of the firm of William Blackwood and Son, is dead. Tho recent Simla telegram announcing the defeat of tho Russians by the Turcomans, and suspension of the expedition during winter, is confirmed by tho St. Petersburg “ Golos.’’ The Russians were severely repulsed, after desperate fighting, by the Turcomans, 15,000 strong, of whom 4000 were billed. The Russians lost 461 killed, and 500 wounded. This disaster explains recent news that 30,000 troops had been ordered to march from the Caucasus to reinforce the Russian expedition. General Hofman has already returned to Tashkend, to resume command there. It is stated that an offensive and defensive alliance has been concluded between Servia and Montenegro, chiefly designed for mutual protection in view of the threatening attitude of Austria. _ . Much jealousy prevails in Austria, Italy, arid Germany, particularly in the two former countries, respecting the almost exclusive control by England and Eranco of Egypt. INDIA. BOMBAY, November 7. Oabul was formally occupied by the British on 12th October. All prisoners taken bearing arms were shot, causing the people to become thoroughly cowed and submissive. The mutiny is faid to have been organised by most of the officers of the Ame r, who himself is regarded with great suspicion. - General Roberts’ proclamation to the people of Afghanistan states that the Ameer having of his own freewill abdicated, and left Afghanistan without government in consequence of the outrage on the Embassy, the British Government is compelled by the force of arms to occupy Oabul, and to take military possession of other parts of Afghanistan. The British Government, after consultation with those representing the interests and wishes of tho various provinces and cities, will declare its will as to future permanent arrangements for the Government of the people. Rewards have been offered for the capture of the men concerned in the attack on the Residency at Oabul—so rupees for Sepoys, 75 rupees for a captain, 100 rupees for a field officer. . A committee has been appointed by the Government of India to arrange for the dispatch and collection of Indian contributions to the Melbourne Exhibition.
