GREYMOUTH, December 8. Tho rush to the Seventeen Mile Beach continues in spite of the unfavorable weather, and the miners speak well of the prospects. A very rich reef was struck on Saturday in the New River tunnel. The Lyell Sluicing claims at Nelson Creek, opened by the Hockstetter race, are yielding splendidly. One claim for the last eight months lOOoz?, retorted gold per month. AUCKLAND, December 6. Two Auckland contractors advertise for fifty men, which is expected to relieve temporarily something of the lack of employment keenly felt owing to the want of funds by tho City Council to carry on any road work. Tho Auckland liabilities of Goddesfries’ firm, which is reported to have failed, amount to about £20,000. The Wellington Exhibition. The Working Men’s Political Association carried a resolution in favor of the proposition for an industrial exhibition at Wellington after the Melbourne exhibition. December 7. H.M. schooner Alacrity arrived last night from Fiji. The vessel is ninety-nine tons, and carries thirty-five men and one gun. She has been engaged for some time past surveying the north-east part of Fiji. She comes to Auckland for repairing and outfitting. QRAHAMBXOWN, December?. The Oarandinis open here on Thursday next. WANGANUI, December 6. i At the Brigade practice last night, a fireman named Aldridge, in jumping from the Empire Hotel into the jump sheet, fell heavily I on the pavement, receiving a slight spinal injury. A Ferocious Foreigner. 1 An Italian named Angelo Caghari, who had t recently served a term of imprisonment for wilful damage to the Court House, applied to Dr. Earle this morning for admission to the hospital. On the doctor declining, Caghari struck him on the head with a large stone, rendering him unconscious fer a few momenta. A warrant has been issued for Oaghari’s apprehension. WELLINGTON, December 6. The Public Works Statement. It is understood that the Public Works statement will be delivered on Tuesday next. The San Francisco MailThe mail steamer City of Sydney with the London mails of the 6 h November, left San Francisco for Auckland on tho 24th nit., contract date. The steamer Australia, with the November colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 2nd instant, two days in advance of due date. December 7, Native AffairsIt is reported on good authority that Rewi has declined to hold any further oommunicalion with the Government, and has rejoined Tawhaio at Te Kuiti; also that Hiroki has left Parihaka and been offered a refuge in the King country. He is now at Ngatimaru. The LoanThe Government have received a cable message from the Agent-General stating that the Bank of England having undertaken tho issue of the Loan, there is no doubt of its being successfully floated. Police NewsA serious stabbing case took place last evening. Two married women, neighbours, had a dispute, during which several threats were made. On the return home of the husbands a row between the men ensued, and one, named James Flannigan, was rather severely stabbed. His wife also received severe bruises. M’Oormick, the other man has been arrested. The doctor states that Flannigan and wife are not out of danger. A young man, named Ryote, was arrested last night for issuing a valueless cheque. The man Connell, who was arrested at Auckland for wife desertion at Christchurch was sent through to-day. St- Mary’s CathedralThe new marble altar for St. Mary’s Cathedral was consecrated this morning by Bishop Redwocd. A large assemblage witnessed the ceremony. DUNEDIN, December 7. The Working Men’s ClubThe Working Men’s Club hero have decided to start a circulating library. Mayoral. A writ has been served on Mr Fish, Mayor elect, by Mr Walter, the present Mayor, with a view to ousting him from office. If successful, it is stated that Mr Walter will have a nominal salary only voted for tho coming year. The OperaThe opera season opened most successfully last evening.
