NEWS OF THE DAY.

EbuAtum. —In our local on the subject of flowers for the Hospital in our issue of the 4'.h inst., a mistake was inadvertently made It should have read as follows—“ Messrs R. N. Newby and H. Crooks, exhibitors at the late rose show, made (he Hospital presents of two splendid collections of roses, which the house steward desires to acknowledge with thanks. Chiamni’s Rotal Italian Cirrous.— This circus, as will be seen by advertisement elsewhere, will open in Christchurch on the 17th instant, and will, without doubt, bo warmly welcomed by the public. The wellknown high character of the entertainment is thoroughly kept up, and a number of welltrained and rare wild animals have lately been added to the show. In our advertisement on Saturday the Dress Circle chairs were stated as being 5s each. The real price is 4?, Ohanqh Institution. —The R W G.M. Bro. Bovoll, with the Grand Lodge officers and delegates of the various Canterbury Lodges, will proceed to Dunedin by the 8.40 express train to morrow to hold their annual meeting.

Teanspbe op Liobnsb. —Tho license of the Waltham Arms Hotel was to day transferred from W. Akerman to P. 0. Bowler. Resident Magistrate's Court. —A considerable amount of business was done to-day. Amongst other eases wore a number brought against individuals for having light or unstamped weights in their possession. Three of the cases were dismissed on various grounds, and in two the defendants were fined and the weights confiscated. James Findlay, for neglecting to send in to the Deputy Commissioner of Stamps a return, as provided by the 108th section of the Stamp Act, 1876, was fined £lO and cost".

Waimatb Plains. —Wo understand that the petition of the thousand working men for land at Wairaato plains (which was forwarded to Sir George Grey a few weeks back) takes a practical shape to-night, when plans of settlement will bo submitted, and working men, as bona fide settlers, will bo enrolled in a company, with subscription of 2s 6d per share. The meeting will be held at Montreal street South to-night, at Bpm, as per advertisement.

Liitlb Aealoa. —The steamer Akaroa will make an excursion trip to Little Akaloa and back, on Anniversary Day. Breach op Stamp Act. —A case was disposed of in the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, for a breach of the Stamp Act, in which tho defendant was ordered to pay tho mitigated penally of £lO. In all future coses of breaches of this Act, it is the intention of the department to press for heavy penalties, the highest fine being £SOO.

The Orphanage Christmas Treat. —As an auxiliary to the efforts being made by the manager of the Lyttelton Orphanage to obtain means to give tho orphans a Christmas treat, it has been suggested to get up a benefit entertainment at Lyttelton either this week or next, the receipts to be devoted to the purpose named, Canterbury Rifle Association. —A meeting of the members of this association will bo held this evening, when a subject of some importance with regard to tho interprovincial rifle match with Otago will bo discussed. As already pointed out, the date fixed by Otago precludes our men going down, unless they sacrifice the Anniversary holiday, which is one of the most popular of the year. This being so, a large number of refusals have been received from men who would otherwise have gone, and the meeting is called to consider what steps are to be taken under the circumstances. This is to be regretted, as tho North Otago men fire a match with Dunedin this year, and thus a triangular match could have been fired between tho three representative teams. IE the Otago men can see their way to alter their date, then the match can probably be fired.

Cricket Fixture. —A match between the Bakers’ and Batchers’ Clubs will be played on the Association’s ground on Wednesday. City Council —The usual meeting of the City Council will be held this evening at seven o’clock. Sydenham Borough Council. —This body will hold their usual weekly meeting to-night.
