NATIVE INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the committee of the association for fostering and encouraging native industries was held last evening at the office of Messrs Draper, Charters, and Co. Mr R. Allan occupied the chair, A letter was read from the Wellington Association. It was resolved that the following resolution be forwarded in reply—“ That this committee is of opinion, while sympathising strongly with the proposed movement, that in the present depressed state of the colony, and the uncertainty at this moment what the Government intentions are as to the encouragement of local industries, the time has not yet arrived for taking any definite action in the matter; but should the Government feel disposed to largely subsidise a proposal of this nature, they would be most happy, in conjunction with other industrial associations, to further discuss the matter, in order that the same may be brought to a successful issue.” It was suggested that an intercolonial exhibition would prove a great success, and might very well be held after the close of the Melbourne one. It was resolved that a telegram be forwarded to the Tariff Committee at Wellington, protesting against the duty on salt, as being very injurious to the curing trade. Mr Hulbert’s name was added to the committee, and it was resolved to call a public meeting of the association as soon as the proposals on the tariff are definitely settled.
