THE DUNEDIN RACES.
Second Day—Tuesday, Deo. 2. The weather, although not so fine as yesterday, was very favorable, being warm and pleasant. The attendance was small owing to its not being a holiday. The Hurdle race was the first event, and To Whetu was made a great pet for it, but fell at the first obstacle, and was never in it after. Unknown was fancied by a good many people, but he also destroyed his chance, and a good race resulted in two outsiders coming in first and second. Four started for the President’s Handicap, and the market movements showed that Lara was considered
to hold the rest safe. These anticipations proved to be correct, the favorite winning in very fast time considering the state of the course.
Tho following are the results : Hurdle Race, of 60 boys. Mr McMastera’ cb g Scamp, aged, Bst 131 b (carried 9st 51b) (J. Allen) 1 Mr Bradley’s Milo, 6 yrs, Bst 121 b (Clifford) 2 Mr Qonrley’s Kildare, aged, 9st 71b (Qourley) 3 Mr Butler’s Te Whetumarama, Mr Hill’s Unknown, and Mr Hunter’s Romance also ran, ia the orler named.
, Betting—7 to 4 sgst Te Whetu j3to 1 , agst Kildare; 4 to 1 agst Unknown and Milo ; 6 to 1 agst Romance and Scamp. Scamp led over the first hurdle, closely fol- , lowed by Milo and Kildare. Te Whetu struck heavily and came down, unseating Lyford, who, however, was soon up again and in the saddle, but was too late to take any prominent part in the race. Going round to the right Scamp took the lead, next coming Kildare and Romance, and a length behind them Milo and Unknown. At the fourth hurdle Unknown fell, turning a complete somersault, and he was then walked in. At a mile Kildare had got up to Scamp fully ten lengths ahead of Romance and Milo, who kept each other company, with Te Whetu far behind. At the far side of tbe course Kildare took a decided Lad, and the race seemed a moral for him, Allen, however, letting Scamp out, he again collared Kildare at the turn into the straight, and Milo and Romance at the same time coming up very fast, a fine race home ensued. Romance and Kildare were first to collapse, leaving the finish to Scamp and Milo, and though the Liter struggled hard to get on terms with McMasters’ horse, tbe latter won comfortably by a length, Kildare third, two lengths away, Romance fourth, Te Whetu last. Time—4miu. 44 J sec. President's Handicap, of 70 sovs, miles. Messrs Mason and Vallance’s Lara, 7st 101 b (Nolan) 1 Mr Ray’s Titania, 6 yrs, Bst 71b (Wattie) 2 Mr Goodman’s Chancellor, 5 yrs, Bst 101 b (Derritt) 3 Mr Chaafe’s Atlantic (Rustic) 0 Betting—2 to lon Lara, 2to 1 agst Chancellor, 3 to 1 agst Titania and Atlantic. Chancellor got the best and Atlantic the worst of a bod start, the former cutting out the running until reaching the stand, when Lara got level with him, and they ran neok and neck round to the back of the course, drawing fully six lengths away from Titania and Atlantic. At three-quarters of a mile, Atlantic left Titania, passed Chancellor, and got up in front of Lara, but the latter soon shook him off, and led into the straight by a length. Here Chancellor made his effort, and ' Wattie at the same time brought Titania up 1 with a rush, an interesting finish ensuing. The favorite, however, came away much as he liked, and won by a length, Titania defeating * Chancellor for second place by a bare head, 1 Atlantic well up. The mare retained her advantage till a mile and a quarter was covered, when Numa closed on her, and Swede at the same juncture cleared away from Hornpipe and Eomance.
