CITY COUNCIL.
Monday, Decembeb 1
Tho usual weekly meeting of the Council was held at 7 p.ru. Present —His Worship tho Mayor, Crs. Gapes, King, Bishop, Vincent, Taylor, Cherrill, Hulbert, Wyatt, England, Lambert, Ayers. The receipts for the week were stated as being £295 Is 83. Tho credit at tho Bank on general account was stated to bo £1278 3s 103. Accounts to tho amount of £9lO 17s 5J were passed and ordered to bo paid. A petition was read from the residents of Manchester street north and Taylor’s lane, asking for one lamp in Manchester street north, near tho belt, and one at Taylor’s lano. Or. Bishop stated that there was no gas main beyond St. Luke’s Church. The town clerk was instructed to reply that there was no gas main in the neighborhood. A letter was read from Mr Blackwell, stating that ho would be prepared to hand in his report on or about December 6th. Or. Ayers laid on tho table the report of Mr Hubbard.
It was resolved that Mr Hubbard’s report be held over till Mr Blackwell’s report was before tho Council.
A letter was read from tho Town Clerk of Dunedin, stating that the urinals had arrived per Remembrance, and would bo for warded as speedily as possible. Cr. Bishop asked whether Crown grants had been applied for for the various reserves vested in tho Council.
The Mayor said tho town clerk would communicate with the Government on tho subject. Or. Hulbert asked what time was fixed by the contract for tho night soil contractor to commence work ?
His Worship said that a resolution of the Council provided that work should commence at 11 p.m. Cr. Hulbert felt that this was too early. Tho Mayor said that tho sanitary committee might arrange with Mr Brightling to start later than 11 p.m. It was resolved—That the matter bo left in the hands of the sanitary committee to take such action as they might deem neoesBary.” Or. Lambert called attention to the dangerous state of the footpath from Bligh’s corner, in Chester street, to Durham street. Tho Surveyor stated that tho residents had declined to contribute their share of the cost of asphalting tho footpath. The matter was referred to the works committee.
Or. Gapes asked whether anything had boon done with reference to the Town Hall designs. The Mayor said that nothing had been done yet. A letter was read from Mr Superintendent Harris, stating that the fire brigade desired to have the now bell erected at the Lichfield street Fire Station, as it would then be heard in all parts of the city. The brigade desired to have the bell erected at a higher elevation than at present, as a number of high buildings had been erected, which prevented the sound being heard. Cr. England moved—“ That the matter stand over till an answer has been received from the insurance companies.” Or. Lambert seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The award of the arbitrators of the East bolt bridge was laid on the table. It recommended that £2OO, one-third, of the cost of arbitration fees, be paid to the contractor. The surveyor’s report was road as follows : 1. The works committee gave the contract for 200 barrels of cement to Messrs Guthrie and Larnaoh. 2. The works committee have given me instructions to lay concrete channel in Lincoln road, Selwyn street, and Antigua street. The channelling of Moa Place is finished. The channelling of Carlton street and Park street is finished. C. Walkden, City Surveyor. It was resolved that Cr, Vincent and the works committee wait on the Drainage Board in reference to the Lincoln road, and report to the Council. Cr. Cherrill said he desired to request the Mayor and Councillors to sit for a group similar to those which now adorned the walls. The offer was accepted with thanks. Or, Hulbort desired to congratulate the Mayor upon his re-election as Chief Magistrate of Christchurch, Or. Taylor endorsed tho remarks of Or. Hulbert, aud also desired to add his congratulations on tho re-election of the Mayor, His Worship thanked tho Council for the very kind manner in which they had welcomed hia re-election.
The Council then at 8 5 p.m. adjourned,
