OHBISTOHUBOH. Tuesday, Decembeb 2. [Before G. L. Mellish, Eeq., R.M.] Deumk and Dibobdebly.—A first offender was fined ss. Oetielty to Animats.—John Vasey Kenyon was fined 40s for cruelly ill-using a horse. Illegally on Pbemises —Patrick Byan was charged with being illegally on the premises of John Bligh. The offence was admitted, and the accused, who appeared to be suffering from the effects of drink, was sentenced to forty-eight imprisonment with hard labor. LYTTELTON. Tuesday, Deoembbe 2. [Before J. T. Bouse, Esq., J.P.] Fame Pbbtenob.—On old offender, Elizabeth Bryant, on remand, was charged with obtaining board and lodging to the amount of £1 4s, by false pretence, from Charles Johnson, a boarding-house keeper in Oxford street. Constable Neil stated that on Monday morning he arrested the accused in a disreputable house. The prosecutor and his wife testified to the circumstances, and Bench sentenced the prisoner to six months’ imprisonment. QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT. The Quarterly Licensing Bench sat this morning in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Commissioners present —Q. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M., and H. J. Tancred, Esq., J,P. At ten minutes to one Messrs Mellish and Tancred took their scats on the Bench. Mr Mellish excused the absence of Messrs Harman and Loo, on the ground that the former was unable to come down, and the latter was engaged with the University examinations. It was thus impossible to form a quorum, but rather than keep the applicants and other persons interested waitieg, he and Mr Tancred would consider the business before the Court, and subsequently call a special meeting to confirm or otherwise deal with the decisions arrived at. Mr B. D. Thomas stated to the Bench that ho had made a special journey to Port that morning to attend the Quarterly Licensing Meeting there, and on his arrival bad ascertained that Mr Joyce had written to the clerk of the Court, stating that Mr Keswick had informed him he should be unable to get a quorum of Commissioners. The business was then proceeded with. NEW APPLICATIONS. Stephen Lawrence applied for a license for an hotel, corner of Colombo road and Third street. Mr Mellish said that the circumstances had not altered since the former application was made, and the Bench would have to decline the application. John Somers applied for a license for an hotel in Colombo road South. The same remarks made by the Bench in the application just refused applied, and the application was refused. TBANBPBES. The Marine Hotel, Sumner, from Hamilton’s Trustees to J. W. Morton. Valley Hotel, Heathoote, from J. Marsdon to P. Connelly. Terminus Hotel, Christchurch, from Richmond’s Trustees to W. Muff. The New Brighton Hotel, from Thomas Tata to D. W. Hamilton. Granted. BBMOTA.I OF LICENSE. Elizabeth Fuchs made an application of removal from the. present premises to the now Wellington Hotel. Granted. The meeting adjourned until Tuesday, 9th instant.
