THE DUNEDIN A. AND P. SHOW.
Second Day—Fbiday, Novbmbeb 28 After the great efforts made by article writers in the local papers in putting forth tho claims of the show llarge flamers about town, and a general half holiday, it was to be regretted that the weather to-day was wet and miserable in the extreme, and Forbury was a perfect [swamp. About a thousand people were computed to have visited the grounds daring the day, and for the moat part these sought shelter from the pelting showers in tho frand stand, the manufacturers' tent, or the ooths. The classes judged were those for draught and light horses, pigs, clogs, and produce, and manufactures. There were fiftyfour draught entries, compared with thirty»ix last year ; six competed in the class for entires of any ago. Russell and Craig's Young Prince of Wales, imported from Scotland, a grand upstanding bay of the right type, with bone and muscle and well topped, was first; James Shand's Taieri Tom, bred by Mr Nimmo, by Sir Colin, a stallion showing plenty of quality and feather, was second ; Robert Blair's Rub tho Ranter, a fine stamp of a horse, third; James Cullen's Royal Prince, first as a three-year-old last year, came out in very good order, and Peter Grant's Young Clyde, by Campsie, was a closo enmpnet animal, well set, and a grand mover. The three-year-old entires formed a bandaomo quartette. Robert Charters' exhibit, by Governor, a good specimen of the Clydesdale, was put first; Wm. Montgomery's Young Sir G. Grey second j Haslie Bros' Paisley colt commended; eight two-year-old colts were presented. Mr Nimmo'a Sir Richard Wallace, byiWallace, imported, dam by Emperor, a bay colt and a sweet animal, but rather fine in the bone, was first; Jameß Paw's Lord Jfelaoa, first at Ohristohurch and Oamaru, was i
horo put second; A. Bannatyne'a Royal George commended. Four yearlings competed. A. Hannah's, by Young Prince of Wales, placed first, was extra good with neat head and plenty of timber; K. 15 Ferguson's Robin Gray, second, was somowbafc wanting in quality, and not a nent head ; Robert Ooupland's Black, commendod, has the making of a powerful horso. Robert Charters took first and second prize for mares in foal, the mares being by Surprise and Thane of Clyde, the latter second. Peter Grant's Duchess l9t (imported) ought to have been the prizetaker, but received only a commend. In three-year-old fillies, the five entries were a good lot. Peter Grant's Duchess 3rd was first, and well merited the position. She has greatly improved since she took tho palm as a two-year-old. R. Coupland's bay, by Young Prince of "Wales, placed second, has a good body, but was deficient in the legs ; James Anderson's waß commended. Six competed as two-year-olds. J. B. Sutton's filly, by Young Prince of Wales, a big boned exhibit, was first; James flow's, by Wallaco, second. There was much difference of opinion ovor this decision. _A. Hannah took the prize for yearling fillies with another by Young Prince of Wales. Out of tho Bix very fine geldings, E. Menlove's was not to be beaton, D. Proudfoot's gray second, Moloney's Duke commended. In pairs of geldings, R. Clark's bay and chesnut wore decidedly tho best, Marshall and Copeland's grays second, J. Lambton's pair third. Peter Grant's pair of mares, Duchess 2nd and Maggie, were animals that merited the prize, Duchess was a prizetaker with Jenny Lind in the same class last year. E. Menlove's renowned Countess took the prizefor dry mares, Larnach's second. Young Prince of Wales received tho silver mesial in stallions, and Menlove's Countess as the best mare. The judges were Messrs Stark, Hamilton, and McKerrow. The light horees do not call for special comment. G. Coombs' Flying Dutchman, second last year, was now first, Thos. G-corgo's Young Angler second, S. Powell's Flying Pish third. J. Morhano obtained tho prize for two-yoar-olds, by Caseivellaunus. In yearling colts, thoroughbred mares and fillies, G. Dodson, the only exhibitor with stock by Cassivollaunus secured all the prizes. No award was made for single carriago horses. For pairs tho grand pair of Mr E. B. Oargill, Chutney and Mango, 16£ hands, which wore first last year, maintained their laurels; D. F. Mann's pair second. In pairs of buggy horses under 15 hands, W. H. Taggart and A. L. Philp were first and second. There was a capital class of single buggy horees, in which Bacon and Son's roan mare Jessie was first, W. Taggart's Beoond. R. Farquharson obtained first for hackney entire, and W. Grieve for hackney filly. W. L. Philp stood first for hacks, and J. A. McKenzie's Yeoman in hacks shown in saddle. D. McMaster's Black Bess and Scamp took the prize in ladies' hacks. W. Goldie's ponies were first in each class. The best of the hunters ridden over a 4ft. jump was F. W.Peter's Turk. In the leaping contests D. McMaster's Scamp was first, W. H. McTaggart's Ronald second. The leaping for ladies' horses was won by Mi'sb McMaster's Scamp, ridden by Miss McMaster, the equestriennes showing great pluck and judgment. There was a fair show of pigs. James Shand was first for boar and breeding sow ; Robert Wenkfiaid first and second for sow under nine months, and for litter; The prize takers for dogs were—Coolie, J. Gillespie; greyhound, T. H, Dodson's Sea Maid; English setter, Scott; Irish setter, J. Fotheringham; Gordon setter, N. Wales ; spaniel, Watson Bros. ; pointer, C. C. Armstrong; bull dog, JohnBrown ; bull terriers, Jaa. Hooper ; Skyes, D. F. Muir; Dandy dinmont, W. C. Smith ; fox terriers, E. .1. Spenco ; English terriers, E. B. Cargill. There were 89 entries of dairy produce, against 108 last year. McKay ; two old and two new cheese, O'Donuell and McCormick ; the cheese being made by Mrs Charters ; green bacon and smoked hams, B. Sheedy ; green hams, rolled bacon, smoked and green, McDonald and Miller ; rolled beef, W. P. Porter. Tho grain formed a poor show. Spoight and Co.'s prize sample barley was very bright and prime. Tho Otago Paper Mills Company were awarded a first prize for strong wrapping paper of Euperior quality for ironmongers. The Kaiapoi Woollen Company showed some dyed worsteds which wcro greatly admired, but the Moagiel Company did not exhibit at all. Gibbs and Co.'s bone du3t was awarded a first prize. J. and W. Stewart and Sinclair and Morton were first prize takers for single and double buggies of very superior finish. The Brush, Broom and Fibre Company's exhibits were excellent. A rabbit extorminator was shown by B. and T. Burd, which consisted of a cylinder wherein coke was burned and a poisonous gas made which, by the aid of bellows, was drivon with a hose pipe into rabbit warrens. Two live bunnies were subjected to the process in a glass case, and died within three or four seconds. The exterminator takes the form of a handbarrow. General regret has been expressed at the non-arrival of a number of imported cattle, brought by Mr Gardner, in time to be judged. They were detained by the delay to the Claud Hamilton. The newspaper reporters at Dunedin receive worse treatment on the show ground than in any other district where a show is held.
