INTERPROVINCIAL RIFLE MATCH.
The next match between Otago and Canterbury will be fired at Dunedin about the middle of the present month. Owing to the unsettled weather that has prevailed since the Bhooting season commenced, little practice has been had, but apart from that fact the competitors who will go from Christchurch will soon get into good practice. Owing to the difficulty that was experienced in the two former contests in obtaining fifteen reliable shots, the number has, at the request of the Canterbury men, been reduced to ten. This will enable our province to send a team equally good with Otago, that is, presuming our best men will find it convenient to go to Dunedin. There is no doubt that this reduction will increase the chance of victory for the local team, as Otago has many good men, whereas Canterbury has but few. The match is, virtually, Otago v Christchurch, as the Southern team will include men from Oamaru to Invercargill, and until more spirit is evinced in this province it cannot hope to cope with the Southerners with a really fair show of success in any considerable number. A letter has been sent round to probable competitors, and those gentlemen are requested to forward an immediate reply to Lieut. Appleby as to their willingness or otherwise to take part in the match.
