LYTTELTON REGATTA, 1880,

A meeting of the regatta committee was held on Friday night in the Lyttelton Colonists' Hall, and the following business transacted :—A letter from Coles' Band, offering to play on regatta day, and naming price, was referred to a subcommittee. A request from the land sports' committee for assistance was declined. An inquirer wrote asking if there would be a race for whaleboats, and the secretary was instructed to reply in the negative. Mr 11. Allwright wrote, stating that he could not get any concession from the Government in respect to railway fares to be charged on regatta day, also advising receipt of a subscription of £5 to the fund from the Hon. J. Hall. The seoretary read a letter from the Commissioner of Railways, granting the usual concessions of railway yard accommodation for refreshment booths, also of free carriage for boats on the railway where they are to compete in the races, freight to be paid if they do not so compete. Some minor correspondence was disposed of. The chairman said that as Mr Rich, one of the collectors, was not present he could not offer any report. Messrs A. McDonald, Hill, and Simmonds, hotel-keepers in port, were present, and stated that they in conjunction with Messrs Graham and Hill had made a canvass, the result being that they could guarantee to the committee £l2O. A committee, consisting of Captain McLellan, the treasurer, commodore, and vice commodore, was appointed to let the sites. For a committee ship it was decided that the Harbor Board be asked for the use of the tug boat, if not otherwise employed. In reference to a flagship, no action was taken pending a report as to what ship could be obtained, but a resolution was passed that the catering for refreshments, &0., should be let by tender. The rules and courses submitted by the sub-committee were, with some alterations, adopted, and the meeting adjourned to the 10th instant.
