THE DUNEDIN A. AND P. SHOW.

DUNEDIN, November 27. The third Show of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society opened to-day. The weather waß fine in the morning, but turned to rain during the afternoon. There was a fair attendance of visitors. Many of the arrangements are open to improvement, but, first of all the Society must obtain a ground of its own nearer Dunedin. This would also have the effect of augmenting the number of visitors. The total entries are 750 compared with 723 last year. Sheep, cattle, and implements were judged to-day, and the prize tickets put up. The judges were—Merinos, Messrs Pitt, H. Ford, and Elworthy; Leiceaters, Messrs Dale, Macauley, and Scott; Lincoln and Romney, Messrs Little, J. T. Ford, and M. Studholme ; fat sheep, Messrs Menlove, Scott, and Little; and shorthorns, Messrs Bristol, J. Hay, and J. Mclllraith ; Ayrshires, Messrs McCallum, McFarlane, of Timaru, and McFarlane, of Wangaloa. There were 198 entries of sheep, seven over last year. In Merino the prizetakers were the Hon. R. Campbell nine first, and silver medal for best ram and ewes. The prize ram was said to be a different sheep to the prizetaker at the metropolitan. Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. got three seconds, three thirds, and two highly commended, principally with rams; Sise and Co. one second, one third, and two highly commended for ewes ; J. Johnston got two thirds for ewes also. Mr Campbell, as largest prizetaker, carried off the ten guinea cup given by the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Company. In Leicester the N.Z. and A. Land Co., with some splendid sheep, secured silver medals for best ram and ewe, five firsts, five seconds, and one third ; James Shand secured two firsts, three seconds, and two thirds, with sheep showing plenty of symmetry and length of staple; James Allan took one first and second, four third, and one commended ; McPhcrson Bros, were second in three two-tooth rams. The foregoing competed throughout the classes for this breed. In Lincolns Thomas Sutton gained two firsts, a third, and a commended; Fred. Sutton two firsts, medal for best ram, two seconds, and two highly commended ; N.Z. and A. Land Co. two firsts, medal for best sire, three seconds, one third, a highly commended and two commends; Jas. Allan three firsts, three seconds and a commend ; J. O. Buckland waß commended for ram over four-tooth. The Romney Marsh sheep were all from John Reid's, of Elderslie, who took all the prizes and medals with well framed and grandly-woolled animals. In fat sheep, the exhibits of Henderson and Mcßeath,who gained two first, a second and a highly commended, attracted general attention. The other prize winners were N. Z. and A. L. Co. one first, two second, and three third ; James McLisb, prizes for two-tooth merino wethers; and James Smith, for five fat ewes or wether lambs tinder four months. There were 139 cattle exhibits, compared with 92 last year, including several new importations j but several entries from S. Q-ardiner, Victoria, did not come on the ground. James G-ow's bull, Stafford, a large animal with colour and large frame in his favour, was placed as champion of the shorthorns. The N.Z. and A.L. Go's Duke of Oak, a superior bull, was placed second; David Carson's Stockweli third; John Duncan's Waterhouae commended. Of the three year old bulls John Shennan's St. Andrew, showy and level in appearance, was awarded first prize, and James Shand's Eugenie second. There were five two-year-old bulls, of which H. Carswell's Master Riley was justly first, Mr Etching's Heir of Roan Duchess, came in for second, and Mr Menlove's exhibits by Alphonso, which was first at Oamaru, third. Seven yearling bulls were shown, that of James Gow, by Stafford, taking first. James Shand's Young Duke of Brunswick second, J. Horwood's Fußileer third. In cows or heifers, Horwood's Duchess of Bridgewater was first, Etching's Ruby second, and Sweetbriar third. Menlove took the prize for three-year-old heifers with O wn Mary, by Mr Boag's Alphonso.J. Carswell's Jessie Becond, J. Gow'i Mabel third. Menlove also gained first and the champion prize for best cow or heifer with Flower of Brunswick, the first at Timaru, Christchurch, and Oamaru. Kitching's Riby Countess was second, and Riby Duchess third. Kitching's Ribytov'n yearling heifer was awarded a first, Alice Shand's Jennie Deans second, and the N.Z. and A. Co. third. There was a fair show of Ayrshire cattle. In bulls Macfarlane's Don and Waddell took first in the classes for aged, two-year-olds, and yearlings respectively. One of the first prize bulls shown by Mr Cook at the previous shows was put third. William Cowan's Maggie was first for cows in milk, and Nora in heifers. David Warnock was first in a good class of yearling heifers. Macfarlane's Sir Redmond took the medal for bulls and cows, Maggie a similar award for cows. _A few Alderney's were presented, Messrs Neill and Larnach with neat animals, possessing traits of good breeding, being the prize takers. There was a fine show of fat cattle. In thirty entries S. Garforth was first for fat bullocks, cow and heifer, as well as fat cow of any age. Hay Brothers, Annandale, gained first and second for their large bullocks, shown at the Metropolitan. Henderson and Mcßeath also took a first prize for fat steer. The New Zealand and Australian Land Co., with shorthorn and fat Galloway cattle, received the first six and second and third prize. There was a very poor display of implements. Reid and Gray, Robinson and Co., Henderson, Law and Co., New Zealand Hardware Co., R. Fleming and Co., Glaiste and Cunningham were the chief exhibitors. There was nothing calling for special comment.
