The carnival in aid of the Hospital and Benevolent Institution, was opened last night in Sloan's Theatre. For months past the ladies had been preparing for it, and a finer display of all kinds of household and fancy work was never set forth in this town. There were eight stalls and the usual Post Office, and the articles offered for sale were exceptionally good. A great crowd assembled, and despite the dull times,.some £l5O were taken. Mr Sheehan's Super-human ActivityThe return of monies paid to Ministers for House allowance and travelling or other expenses in excess of their salary since Ist July, 1878, to 3rd October, 1879, shows that Mr Sheehan's carriage hire, £491, equals the sum expended for cab hire for all the others within a pound. Mr Sheehan's total expenses, made up of travelling and cab hire, amount to £lOl4. None of the expenses of the other Ministers reach £2OO except Mr Macandrew's, £245. In Mr Sheehan's £491 for cab hire is included the hire of the carriages conveying 3 ecretaries and Natives in attendance upon the Native Minister. The total expenses amount to £2234, of which £1391 is for travelling and. £345 for house allowance. AUCKLAND, November 27. A House Struck by Lightning—Marvellous Escape of the Family. Lightning struck the house of Faulkner, a settler at Otumotai, Tauranga district. Mrs Faulkner and three children were sitting in the kitchen by the fire when the lightning struck the chimney, travelling down into the kitchen, split the woodwork of mantelpiece in two, and dashed the four persons who were sitting near the fire to the ground. The electric fluid struck the hearthstone, smashing two bricks. The husband ran into the kitchen and found his wife and children senseless on the floor, and the apartment full of smoke.
