NEWS OF THE DAY.
Sydenham Election. —The contest for the Mayoralty of Sydenham promises to be a close one, if the interest manifested by the burgesses is taken as a criterion. The rival candidates, Ors. Brown and Charters, pitched their head quarters opposite the BorougbJOouncil chambers, each room being o.nspicuous by the flogs with which they were gaily decorated. From the time voting commenced, a constant stream of cabs and expresses set in towards the scene of operations, loaded with the supporters of either candidate. At 12.15, out of 1100 ratepayers on the roll, 250 had recorded their votes, of which Or. Brown claimed nearly two thirds, each side being very sanguine of victory. Free luncheons were provided, which were as liberally patronised as provided. The final state of the poll will be declared by the Returning Officer at seven o’clock this evening. Sydbnham Mayoralty. —Mr Charters addressed a public meeting of the burgesses at St. Saviour’s schoolroom last evening. About 250 persons were present, Mr Foster in the chair. The proceedings were commenced by reading the circular address issued by Mr Charters, which Mr Foster said, as an ex - Councillor, ho could vouch for. Mr Charters addressed the meeting at length, and after satisfactorily answering a number of questions put to him, a vote of confidence
was passed almost unanimously, only five hands being hold up against it. A committee meeting was afterwards held, a number of gentlemen volunteering their services for the election day. Ranqioba Magistbate’s Couex. —At this Court yesterday, before Messrs Beswick, Cunningham, and Blackett, B. Vaughan, charged on the information of A. P. lutton with damaging his property by cutting down a rose tree, value Is, was fined 40j, to pay the value of the tree (Is), and costs, or in default one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Walter Wignall, charged with riding furiously along High street on 15th November, was fined 20s and costs. B. Watkins, owner of one cow found wandering at large on the 15th November, was fined ss. The application of W. White for a slaughter-house license was refused.
Fine Aets— Mr N. K. Ohorrill, who has just returned from a tour in the Hot Lake country of the North Island, has taken a large number of pictures of the most interesting portion of this singularly beautiful country. They comprise views of Ohinemutu, the native part and the European, and Lake Rotorua. Of the pink and white terraces there are several views from various points which give the spectator an idea of the grandeur of these natural curiosities. Mr Cherrill has secured some splendid views in the bush between Tauranga and Ohinemutu, many of which are worth a close inspection. Baptist Chuech, Madbas Beidge.~A service of song, “The World’s Redeemer,” was given last evening by Mr H. Corrick’s singing class in connection with the above church. J. H. Twentyman, Esq., presided, and gave the connective readings. The service was opened bv singing the hymn “ Joy in Sorrow.” Mr E fiord then engaged in prayer. At the close of the service, which went well throughout, the chairman expressed his pleasure at being present, at the same time regretting the absence of the Rev. Charles Dallaston, who would have been present but for his indisposition. He was, however, pleased to hear that he was improving in health, and was expected to resume his labors amongst them on Sunday next. The proceeds of tho evening were to be devoted to the fund for tho purchase of an American organ for tho use of the church, the estimated amount realised up to the present time being £25, leavingja balance of about £3O required to complete the purchase. The choir, which was conducted by Mr H. Corriok, was ably assisted by an efficient band, Mr T. Searell presiding at the piano and Mr J. Tucker at the harmonium. A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close, after the usual votes of thanks, by tho chairman pronouncing the benediction. Canteebuey Jockey Club.— The halfyearly general meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will take place on Saturday next, the 29th inat., at 4 p.m.
Theatbb Royal. The “ Shaughraun ” was repeated at this place of entertainment last night, and went as successfully as on previous occasions. It will be repeated again this evening. Gaiety Theatbb, Despite the bad weather there was a very good house at the Gaiety last night, when the “ Doctor of Alcantara,” was repeated. Miss Beatrice’s introduced song, “ Love thee, Dearest,” and Mr Florence’s cavatina, “Love’s Cruel Dart,” were both enthusiastically encored, and the other portions of the opera elicited loud plaudits. It will be repeated this evening. The South Line.—Owing to an accident occurring to the goods train near Otaio, through the washing away of the permanent way, the trains south and north only ran to the Otaio yesterday, and the passengers walked over the bad bit. The express last night was half an hour late in arrival owing to this circumstance. Mr Garston, the station master at Christchurch, received a telegram last night stating that means would be taken last evening to have the damage repaired, and that the express leaving here to-day would be enabled to run right through. Philosophical Institute.—At the meeting this evening a paper will be read by Professor Julius von Haast, Ph.D., P E. 8., entitled, “ Notes on Ziphius Epiodon Novae Zealandiac, the Goose-beaked Whale.” Friendly Societies’ Pete. —ln another column appears an advertisement of the Amalgamated Benefit Friendly Societies’ Fete, to be held in tbe grounds of the A. and P. Association, on Boxing Day. The programme of events is published.
