SPORTS COMMITTEE.

The sports committee held their usual usual weekly meeting yesterday at 4 p.m., in the City Council Chambers. Present —The Mayor of Christchurch (in the chair), and Messrs Walkden, Hulbert, King, Bishop, Alport, Mitchell, Hebden, Briggs, Pratt, and Hobbs. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Letters were read from the Battalion and Railway Bands offering their services, but the committee resolved to call for tenders for the music in the usual manner. Permission was granted to the fire brigade to use the grand stand on the night of the 16th prox. for a display of fireworks, After a short discussion, it was resolved that there should be two publicans’ booths. Mr Mitchell suggested that an advertisement of the programme should be given to the “ Sun” newspaper. It was resolved that this should bo done. It was resolved that, in addition to the booths already decided upon, there should ho three confectioners’ and one luncheon booth, and that the whole of the sites for booths and stalls should be sold by auction. The Mayor brought under the notice of the committee a resolution which had been passed the previous

evening by the Sydenham Borough Council, on the question of their wishing to alienate a portion of the domain, A conversation ensued, in which the members present expressed their opinions very freely at what they regarded as the consequences of the wilful misrepresentation of their actions by the Pbkss. It was resolved on the motion of Mi Hebden—“That as there appears to be some misapprehension respecting the intention of the sports association with regard to Hagley Park, they desire to state: —1, That the association has not and never had any intention of asking any other than voluntary contributions at the gates. 2. That the association desires to record that it has no intention of alienating any portion of the park, but only requires sufficient authority over the sports enclosure (440 yards in circumference) to enable them to prevent the public from trespassing thereon during the sports. 3. That the association only desires the authority referred to during the time occupied by the sports. On the suggestion of Mr Hebden it was resolved that it should not be compulsory upon any one to appear in athletic costume, except competitors in the races and jumping matches. Mr Norgate was nominated as a member of the committee. This completed the business, and the committee adjourned.
