LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

This Council met as usual on Monday night. Present—Councillors Reed, Smith, McClatchie, Weyburn, Grub and Macdonald. On motion, Or. Macdonald took the chair. Leave of absence to his Worship the Mayor for two meetings was granted, after which the minutes were read and confirmed. A letter from the Lyttelton Colonists’ Society, asking for a definite answer re subsidy was held over until the councillors comprising the committee appointed some time ago to report upon the matter were present. Applications from the borough school and the Roman Catholic school for donations towards their respective prize funds were held over, on the motion of Or. Reed, until the opinion of the Council’s solicitor was obtained as to whether the Council could legally vote sums for these institutions. Accounts amounting to £340 I3s 3d were passed for payment. Cr. Macdonald (the chairman) having to leave the Council, Or, Smith took the chair. A letter from A. Briscoe and Co., Dunedin, offering to deliver 3-inch cast iron socket pipes at £l3 per ton was read and was left in abeyance until further replies to other enquiries were received. An offer of Mr O. P. Barker for one of the Council’s reserves of 400 acres, at 4s 3d per acre leasehold, was left with the estates committee, with power to act. The foreman of works’ report was read. In reference thereto, it was resolved that Mr Cuff be employed to lay off the line in Halt’s Gully and do any other surveying work necessary ; also, that an asphalt pavement be laid from the Bank of New Zealand to the corner of Dublin street, should the holders of the property there agree to contribute one-half the cost. With reference to the boiler ordered from Messrs Scott Brothers, it was resolved that if it were not delivered by Wednesday the fine would be imposed. A resolution was carried that the water supply committee ascertain what arrangements could be made with Mr J. Marsden for entering upon his land for the purpose of connecting the pipes from the Council’s wells on his property with the mains. Council then adjourned for a fortnight.
