SPRINGFIELD.

A correspondent writes:—Tie railway to Springfield will be completed in a few days, and although the contractor has exceeded his contract time, he has had serious difficulties to contend with, brought about by the unusual wet season. The Springfield Coal Company (Limited) are making preparations for an extension of their works. The coal citrae'ed contains from 50 to 60 per cent, of fixed carbon, and the scams from which the supply can bo drawn vary in thickness from 2ft. to 4ft. 6in. The fireclays are plentiful, and in nearly every case of the best quality, and machinery is now in course of erection for turning out pipes, chimney cans, wall coping, bricks, &e. The argillaceous deposit overlying the minerals is also well adapted for brick making purposes, and has for the past two years been turned to account, and on the completion of the railway siding will soon bo widely known. The Springfield colliery brass band turned out for the first time on Saturday last, and acquitted themselves in a manner that must have taken most by surprise, as after one month’s practice they can render two or three fiieces in capital stylo. The weather here of ate has been very wet, with a low temperature, and the agriculturists would welcome a 'spell of warm, dry weather, as, alter the rain, it would go a long way in securing an abundant harvest. During the past month, the barometer has stood low, ranging from 28 32 to 28.97, standing at the former reading now, with the thermometer ranging from 42deg. to 65deg. in the shade at twelve noon daily.
