MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tubsdat, Notbmbbb 25. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., B.M.J Dbune and Disoedbelt.—Two offenders against sobriety were fined 5s and 10s respectively, and a third was allowed forty-eight hours to take the pledge. Labobnt.—A lad named Henry Beardsley, remanded from the previous day on a charge of stealing a revolver from James Froggatt, was brought up for sentence. His Worship said he would let him off this time, but if brought up again he would be imprisoned and flogged. The boy was then discharged. Assault —Samuel Haines was charged with assaulting William Webb, licensee of the Riocarton Hotel, on the 23rd instant. Mr Thomas, for the complainant. The prosecutor said that on the night in question ho was standing outside his bar door, when the defendant, without any warning, came up and struck him in the face with his fiat. The defendant admitted assaulting Mr Webb, but said he thought he was some one else, and he regretted the circumstance very much. His Worship said whoever the defendant had mistaken Mr Webb for, there was no doubt he had committed a very unprovoked assault, for which he should fine him £5 and 14s costa of two witnesses.
